The secret pride and joy of Asturians

Asturias is a region in northern Spain with a view over the Bay of Biscay, neighbouring Galicia, Cantabria and Castille and León.

Well-known for its apple cider, dairy production and its heavy regional bean stew called ‘fabada’, Asturians do also have a sweet tooth and their guilty pleasure are biscuits called ‘moscovitas’.

The name of the biscuits refers to someone who comes from Moscow, but there is no evident connection with that city despite many ongoing myths and rumours. A small-scale family-run bakery called Rialto owns the recipe for these mouthwatering almond and chocolate flavoured biscuits.

Although the bakery started producing the biscuits in Oviedo a long time ago,  their reputation has spread exponentially in the most recent years. But even if they can now be found all across Spain, they still maintain a status of originality and luxury because they are not distributed at supermarkets or medium sized grocery shops. The distributors are normally tiny shops that specialise in selling gourmet products and the recipe is still, at least to some extent, a secret.
