he hadn’t bothered to wash the coal dust off his hands or face before going out to meet her, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway his whole body was covered in the stuff, nothing would ever wash it out of his hair or clothes. that damn place infested even the blood in his veins no matter how much he tried to pretend it didn’t. slinging himself down beside her, making sure to approach with enough noise that she heard him and wouldn’t lash out but not mentioning the fact that he did so, he offered something that was almost a smile but couldn’t quite get all the way there. like he’s starting to forget the motion.

“i found some of that herb your mother was looking for, the plant that grows down in the mine? i can’t remember the name.”
