I absolutely love just wandering around a new place, either here or abroad and seeing how people interact, I like blending in with the locals, poking around, getting my bearings on the place.
Similarly at home, I like to pick a place in the yard and then just sit out and watch what’s going on. The woodpeckers lately are always fighting atop the old telephone pole, there’s been a red-tail hawk lurking in the trees on the perimeter of the yard, when he flies overhead the roosters growl their disapproval. A couple of crows have taken to hanging out on one oak branch and the chickens slowly clear out of the area, though I’ve never seen a corvid attack any of my birds. Sometimes hens sparring for power, roosters court hens or call their hens over for a bug or a snack they’ve found, I watch the turkeys just being pre-historic weirdoes. Today they've discovered an old mirror where they can see themselves, they are fascinated, jockeying for position in front of it. The dogs come by to see me then crash out around my feet drowsy after a long night’s work protecting the yard. It’s peaceful for the most part, and the chickens will eventually gather around with me and we will just hang out together watching the world go by.
