An Epilogue to Desolate.
No one says it—that they love each other with wild abandon, so much that their blood runs hot with it, that their souls are an intertwined mess—they don’t say that because they already know. It’s in the way Liam’s arm loops around Theo’s back and pulls him closer, fingers curling into his skin. It’s in the way Theo’s face tilts sideways and he plants a long, lingering kiss to Liam’s temple. All while the sun shines down on them, happy and safe, and the breeze whips through their hair and the hems of their shirts.
Their love is spread all over, it’s ingrained in this mountain, and everything around here knows it.
Yea!! Basically recommend any and all sath fics you can/ want to lol, and I totally agree we gotta stick together. I feel like there’s a lot of us but it seems to be a low key ship unfortunately..
Hi! Then of course, I’ll including some other stories that are either at risk of not being completed or I think are definitely on the dead list. But I am always willing and eager to help a fellow Sath fan out.
Also, since these are all incompleted and haven’t been updated in a while, I haven’t included the label since by their very nature, all these works are WIP.
‘Sink or Swim’ by @bigcatchuck19. Full disclosure I have looked over both his major Sath stories. Look, the author just does Beth so well. Grumpy, quick to anger, gay as hell, loyal to those she loves, and utterly hopeless at romance. This is a very sweet story, and well worth the read. Beth and Sam going on their first date, out on a very relaxing kayak ride. What could go wrong? ;) Beth is aided in this adventure by trying-to-be helpful Hannah and a very mischievous Josh (the author’s has a great grasp of Josh, too. He’s a highlight.). It’s full of romantic tension and will make you smile. Also Sam is so great, and knows EXACTLY how to make Beth squirm with just one comment.
‘Brother Keeper’ by @sammygiddings. This hasn’t been updated in a year and I doubt it will be updated but that’s just me. I don’t speak for the author who may think differently. This right up there some of the most emotional stories I have ever recced. The premise is: what if SAM instead of Beth raced out after Hannah? It’s harrowing to see Beth hollowed out this way - her twin and girlfriend are missing and she’s so incredibly angry that it feels like the rage has burnt a hole through her heart. She’s still Beth, though, loving and loyal, especially to Josh who is shattered after Sam and Hannah’s disappearance. This is an action packed story, and there’s a real MENACE that pervades every paragraph (mostly because I have an inkling that Sam became the wendigo, not Hannah. I don’t know this, mind you, but that was always my guess. Honestly there is something so terrifying about the thought about how competent a Samdigo would be). It’s frustrating where it’s left off, but it’s still worth a read and a review, because the author is terrifically talented and also the Sath scenes (which are all in flashback) are so bittersweet it’ll make you want to cry.
‘Broken Parable’ by @onlyashremains. This one has less Sath in it though what we do get is perfect. It’s canon compliant and has the ‘everyone lives’ scenario, but of course, the Mountain doesn’t want to let the kids go and has it’s own way of coaxing them back into danger.The author does a good job of giving a plausible explanation why a bunch of traumatised college kids would go back to the place where they almost died. And yes, since this is predominately a Sath rec list, both Washington girls play an active role in the story. While the central romance is Sam/Mike, Sam’s love for Beth shines through and I’d argue she is still clearly in love with the youngest Washington and hasn’t properly managed to move on. The story only has one more chapter to run, but the MAJOR caveat is Beth’s arc is still incomplete. As a Sath fan, that’s incredibly annoying since just about every character has secured closure except the Washingtons and Sam. Not to mention one of the best overarching plot points in the story is Sam’s rather complex relationship with Beth and Josh in particular (on a separate note, the depiction of Hannah in this story is amazing and terrifying and worth the price of admission alone). The author has on numerous occasions said she will finish this , but I cannot attest she will since it’s been a long time between drinks. #shrug emoji#. It’s a shame since this is one of the best stories in fandom, but one must respect that life can get in the way and can stop an author from completing their work. As a story, I would certainly recommend it, as a Sath fan, there are some problems, chiefly Beth’s arc is not satisfactory as the work now stands. Maybe a review will nudge her along, who knows ;)
And finally,
‘Oh Beth’ by @bigcatchuck19. Oh, this story. It’s one of the ones that first made me fall in love with Sath so I have a soft spot for it. Again, the author does Beth justice. This one is another post canon story, but Hannah is the only one missing. And Josh still wants them all to come back on the mountain, one year later. I love, love, love Sam and Beth’s relationship in this. They love each other. They both KNOW they love each other. But due to Hannah’s disappearance (and the guilt they both feel for being too caught up in each other to stop the prank) means they are stuck in this excruciating limbo that’s wearing them both down almost as badly as the grief they both feel for Hannah. Again, it’s an action packed story but one that doesn’t ignore character motivations (and the others play a large role here, too, with Josh a particular standout.) I am a little biased so I know the twist (which is amazing) and know why Beth’s rage plays a huge role in the story, but regardless, it’s a terrific story that does Sath right. It’s one I would definitely recommend reading, for many reasons, including Beth trying not to make double entendres about Sam and failing spectacularly.
(honorary mention goes to ‘Take Two, Mr. Munroe’. It’s a Mike story, and mostly Mike/Jess and Mike/Emily, but Sath is clearly a burgeoning and Beth is an A plus badass. Worth a read)
I hope this is satisfactory! There isn’t a tonne of Sath work out there, but what there is pretty darn good. Let me know if you like these ones, and most of all, leave a review, and maybe it’ll inspire one of the authors will be inspired to pick these wonderful stories will start being updated again.

Omg, thank you so much. Believe it or not, I came into fandom with exactly one ship (Chrashley, since they were the only canon pairing that I didn’t loathe). I fell in love with the game because all the characters are adorable trashbags and I love the choice based mechanism in the game. The more I read and interacted with people, the more I started casting my shipping (and friendship) net wide. In fact, I think I truly fell in love with UD when I realized there was a pretty active femship subculture and that everyone seemed to agree the hot twin at the beginning was a total lez.
So I am SO glad I converted you to Jemily, and most of all SATH (yes, those of us who like the Mountain Gays as I call them need to stick together. I’m doing another fic rec list too very soon). And Washingroe is amazing, and my favourite Mike ship BY FAR. And Joshica. Oh, my sweet Joshica (I should note that @onlyashremains got me into that pairing, mostly due to her stupendous story, ‘I Think I would Remember.’ I’m sure if it will be updated, but where it has stopped is at a pretty complete point in regards to the story and I’d encourage any Jess fan, in particular, to read it). But I am always glad to see people around in fandom, and even more glad when they ship Sath

Oh my word, anon, thank you so much. That means a lot to me. I once had someone say my blog is super straight, which is hilarious since I post a lot of Sath content. Sam and Beth is my OTP. While I love many other pairings, I always come back to those girls.They are so well suited and have this tragic kinda thing to them and it breaks my heart. So I will always write them.
OKAY. So here is the thing with Sath in fandom. There is quite a lot of fan art for them and fiction. But it’s rare for them to be front-and-centre- in a fic. It’s incredibly annoying that they tend to be everyone’s background lesbian couple. Which makes those of us who want to read Sath content incredibly frustrated. So finding Sath stories can be very difficult, despite Sam and Beth having the most stories dedicated to them out of all the other femship pairings. While Jemily has less, there are more stories dedicated to them as a pairing, whereas Sath is often relegated to the cute background couple.
Also, I’ve done Sath rec lists before but since then I am sure at least two stories have subsequently been abandoned, which sucks. I mean I get it. Writing takes an incredibly long time but regardless, it’s incredibly frustrating to get invested and then for it not to be completed so for your sake I’m not sure if I should include them. If you want to me to add stories I think are abandoned, let me know, anon, and I will put them on the list.
Now, onto the recs. I should warn you I avoid Jossam LIKE THE PLAGUE which means I think there are some Sath stories out there with Jossam as endgame and even though I am sure they are good, I haven’t read them and won’t be appearing here.
First off, I am not sure what you have read, but there are three stories that are WIP that I would recommend you to read RIGHT NOW and give the authors the love they deserve.
Unknown Subjects by hey_it_could_be_worse (WIP). CSI meet Until Dawn? Yes please. This is terrific because the characters are akin to how they are in canon, while still being in a different enough to be plausible. It’s only two chapters in but Sath are clearly the main pairing. And it’s so good. They are both badass, fearless leaders with great banter and an obvious attraction they are fighting against. Plus the two of them teaming up to fight a dangerous gang? Priceless. Hat tip for grumpy detective Beth and assertive yet empathetic team leader Sam. Also the ‘Beth’ voice in this story is terrific and I would recommend this to anyone, let alone Sath fans.
Captive by @victorian-dad. (WIP) Man. This story. This does what really good Sath stories should do: examine the relationship between Beth/Sam AND Hannah. Cause it’s just AWKWARD to fall in love with your best friend’s twin. This is a great Beth character study, more than anything. It’s also my go-to Sath story. They are so tentatively romantic in this, and Sam is head over heels even though she’s struggling so hard not to be. Beth is struggling too, with growing up and evolving as a person and ends up being a big, obtuse mess. Honestly, it’s terrific, and if you haven’t read it already, you are in for a treat.
Start/End by crescend0. (WIP) It’s a little awkward in places and occasionally some of the pairings are a little jarring, but the good way outweighs the bad. Beth is terrific in this, grim, determined, grieving and angry. I don’t want to give away the plot but it’s very good and very heartbreaking. It’s an unusual take on Sam, too. She’s sexually assertive, more than a woobie romantic, and I quite like that for a change, actually. I am really looking forward to seeing where this goes and I hope you like it too, anon.
To Be Brave by @unboundbymusic. This story has a dreamy, sweet quality to it, and chronicles how scary and unwelcome it can be falling for your best friend’s twin. Sam is great here, terrified of losing Hannah, terrified of telling Beth her feelings and losing her too. I loved it while reading it. It’s unabashed, romantic Sath that will make you smile from ear to ear.
Before you Go by Duskfall. UGH. ANGST! This is so sweet, and so, so heartbreaking. Follows canon-verse. Sam and Beth loved each other, before Sam then lost everything. Read this one, grab tissues, then read something fluffy STRAIGHT afterwards.
A Little Whimsy by Zach_Stone. Coffeshop Sath AU. Beth is a bit softer here than she is usually portrayed but I like it. And Beth has an awesome way of wooing Sam in this story that I will NOT reveal but it’s great.
Shake Those Hips by ryvrr. Happy, drunk Beth, trying to give an oblivious Sam a lap dance? Yes, please.
Okay, now I am going to recommend some stories where Sam and Beth are the background pairing and or part of an ensemble but in all of them they still have a fairly substantial role.
Jitters by @imdisappointingmyparents . I’m not just recommending this just cause this is my awesome co-author. I’m recommending this because it is super adorable. And gay. Sam is a big mess. She’s not a romantic, but she wants to plan a big surprise for Beth for a significant anniversary. What could go wrong? ;). Props for really, sweet banter between Sam and Beth and some really great Jess/Sam friendship scenes. It’s super sweet and well written (as all her works are) and a MUST for Sath fans.
It Takes a Village by @victorian-dad. Beth and Sam are one of the major pairings and this and the author, as always, does them justice. Sam and Beth decide to start a family, but who will be their donor? Sam and Beth are terrific in this, and shows that healthy, stable couple doesn’t always mean ‘boring’. And even when they do argue, the love and devotion they feel for one another shines through. It’s very funny, too, and one I often go back to read.
Friends eat Friends by @flowerkingofanmar . This is mostly a Josh/Chris story but what we DO get of Sath is glorious. Sam is so annoyed at herself for being smitten with Beth and Beth is this debonaire lesbian who is too cool for school but also the biggest dork around Sam. Also props for all the lesbian jokes Beth makes in this. Plus there is Beth in a suit which is my favourite Beth outfit. The rest of the story is great too and unless you are implacably against Climbing Class I would advice you to read it.
And finally Red Light, Green Light, 1,2, 3 by @victorian-dad. Sath aren’t a major pairing in this, but what we get is super adorable and a little bitter sweet. Beth has no chance with Sam, so why try? It’s a terrific ensemble story, and the end of it will make you smile like a loon.
