beloved discord friend requested my OC Mouse and #80, "words," for this prompt list !!

(for context: Mouse frequently travels into a mirror world, Tenebresea, a reflection of the world she lives in, with mysterious creatures and plants and various things in it. she hunts and gathers there for a wealthy elderly patron (and dear friend), Alric. Mouse is actually from that mirror world, but this piece is pre-canon so she doesn't know that yet.)

"You know," Alric says, when she's finished explaining everything she's brought and they've lapsed into comfortable silence, "you've never actually described it to me."

Mouse stares at him for a long moment, unblinking, and finally says, "You've been reading histories and biographies and logs and records of travels into Tenebresea for your whole life, old man. What do you need me to describe?"

Alric laughs, blasé as he always is, and simply asks, "How does it make you feel?"

And Mouse, sitting in this office filled with artifacts, with pieces of that place, both living and dead, stares at her friend and finds there are no words in any language she knows that can possibly answer his question.

🍎 - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?

hey man you can't ask me THAT. anyway yeah uuhh mouse doesn't remember anything before age ~15 or so. she has recently learned that she might just be literally physically someone's mirror image? so she might not have any parents of her own?? but also she was maybe raised by a dude in a cabin for a few years??? everything is unclear. but for a long time her relationship with her "parents" was in a really strange place, where part of her almost hoped that something had happened to them, because otherwise that meant they had simply left her behind :(

🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)?

MAZE POLYCULE BELOVED!! okay yes so mara has THREE love interests :) there's charles, our artificer, who was mara's first kiss in the maze- he knows the most about their history, and at this point is probably the one who knows mara the best, and he's very special and important to them. there's the guy, aka alexis, our barbarian, who was mara's second kiss, but who they now have a bit of a complicated relationship with- he's trying to gain immortality, which is what mara is trying to get rid of, and they're having a lot of weird feelings about it and about him. and most recently there's nadzeya, our druid! mara and nadzeya have been flirting for most of the campaign but neither of them have made a move for a variety of reasons and finally nadzeya got Sick Of That Shit and flat-out told mara to kiss her. so they did :)

(charles is dating mara, alexis, and nadzeya, while alexis is dating charles, mara, and an npc named titan, while nadzeya is dating charles and mara and has a bit of a situationship with an npc named clementine. things in the maze are normal and fun and our relationship dynamics are not at all confusing)

Oh sweet, sweet Mouse 💛 I swear I could talk about this fic forever and ever and I'm thrilled to get an ask about it.

I'm going to put the reply to this underneath a cut though because it might be considered a spoiler.

I guess that since the story is told from Regulus' POV we don't really know all of James' motivations or inner thoughts but if you want to know what I think, it is this:

James absolutely loves Regulus.

However, things are not so easy. I believe that James is a much darker version of himself than what little we see in canon. Basically, his focus is on defeating Voldemort by all means necessary. Sometimes sacrifices needs to be made for The Greater Good, as we know.

James is also selfish. I believe that he loves Regulus, but he also loves Lily and Harry. I think that James believes that his chances of success (defeating Voldemort) and survival are greater with Lily than with Regulus, and when Lily becomes pregnant that seals the deal.

James chooses Lily and Harry over Regulus, in the end, and leaving Regulus in the cave is a way to rid himself of a problem. I think, when it comes down to it, being with Regulus cost James too much, and he did it to save himself.

But hey, these are just my thoughts. What do you think?
