5.22 Late Penitents in Purgatory by Gustave Doré, from The Divine Comedy By Dante Alighieri 1861
The souls gathered around the base of Mount Purgatory share nostalgia for home/life: they yearn for Earth which they left behind quite recently. This parallels with the crew of the USCSS Covenant, having left Earth recently, having been abruptly woken from hypersleep they talk of missing un-recycled air and feeling natural gravity. So much so they risk diverting their course to check out Planet 4, which reminds them so much of Earth. In Milton’s Paradise Lost he describes Heaven and Hell as sharing similar geographical properties as Earth, so this ties in quite neatly with the theme of Paradise Lost.
This plate corresponds with Canto 5 in Purgatory, in which Dante arrives where new souls have entered Purgatory. They are described as being in a rush because of their sudden violent deaths and last minute salvation. Virgil(David), Dante(Walter)’s guide warns him not to dawdle too much and keep moving.
Three souls notice that Dante is not dead like they are and they go to enquire why he is in Purgatory, through this interaction he hears of how they died. Interestingly enough it parallels the deaths of Ledward, Karine and Faris.
Jacopo del Cassero is the first to recount his untimely death to Dante, his death suspiciously is similar to Ledward’s. Here are the similarities:
They are both pursued by their assassins
They both stumble in the reeds
Their death was inescapable
They both died in a pool of their own blood
Jacopo is pursued by assassins, wounded and injured he seeks shelter in a swamp where he died in 1298.
“I hurried to the marsh. The mud, the reeds
entangled me; I fell. And there I saw
a pool, poured from my veins, form on the ground.”
- 82-84 of Purgatory 5, The Divine Comedy
Ledward tries to make his way back to the lander but stumbles multiple times, with the aid of Karine he makes it back to the lander. He sits on the med bay table as the blood burster exits his back, his blood pooling on the floor. The same pool where Karine and Faris both slip over(This is a comedy after all) . After Ledward was infected by the motes there was no escape for him much like Jacopo from his pursuers, his fate is only death.
In Alien 1979 there is an outtake of Lambert/Veronica Cartwright who slips in the blood pooled from Kane’s/John Hurt’s body when the chestburster escapes.
The next to recount their death is Bonconte da Montefeltro, who was a warrior. These are the similarities between him and Hallett and Ankor:
They are all soldier/warrior types
They all die with their throats eviscerated
They all die on the battlefield/plain
“my throat was pierced—fleeing on foot and bloodying the plain” - 98-99 of Purgatory 5, The Divine Comedy
The third soul to recount their death is Pia de’ Tolomei, who was killed by her husband. I believe she is parallels with Karine and Faris, as it was Oram’s decision to check out the signal and Planet 4; inadvertently leading to her death. And Tennessee’s inability to save his wife from the Neomorph.
We all were done to death by violence,
and we all sinned until our final hour;
then light from Heaven granted understanding,
so that, repenting and forgiving, we
came forth from life at peace with God, and He
instilled in us the longing to see Him. - 52-57 of Purgatory 5, The Divine Comedy
There are similarities between Oram’s character and Bonconte’s father Guido as well:
They were both men of faith
They both were taken by the devil
They both spoke of Mary/Mother before their death
Guido dies with Mary(Mother of God) on his lips, thinking he could trick God and get into heaven by becoming a Franciscan friar, but in the end he was still dragged to Hell. Oram a man of faith hungers for power as seen in the Last Supper, desperate to lead the crew. But once he’s given that leadership he don’t know what to do with it. Believing he is following God’s will and the path before him is one of faith. It’s ironic his death comes at the hand of the Devil/David, misleading him and making him believe he was in control.
