So, what’s an effort? The eight efforts are
· Wring · Press · Flick · Dab · Glide · Float · Punch · Slash
Each of these efforts can be used, in conjunction and separately to evoke almost any character and any idea within the human condition, and i’ve included a diagram on where each effort lies within the combination of factors.
Okay, but all of this is movement based, how does it relate to acting?
Although Laban’s background was dance, his methods become useful in acting when we apply them to developing character. Every person moves differently, and tiny differences in movements can give cues to character factors, for example, if a person is characterized by wringing, pressing or punching, they are a forceful person, aggressive, consistent, because they are associated with sustained and strong movements. However, wringing can also be a characteristic of a nervous person, because of its indirect factor. Just a quick post today, but i’m interviewing this week for the next entry, and it’s all about shakespeare and how we can use Laban in practice.
