Early adopter in ATL – Ergonomics are perfect in every way. It sounds more like a vacuum than a mower. I had to adjust the deck to go from my front yard (Bermuda) to my back yard (fescue). Adjusting this deck is incredibly easy – this was a real chore on the Honda. Pushing this mower was much easier, and I don’t miss the self-propelled feature a bit.

The EcoMow is a revolutionary new proto-type built by US students from George Mason University, Washington D.C. using a toy car as the basis. It trims the grass using an electrical bar cutter which requires less energy than a radial blade system which conserves power.

The ‘science bit’ is that it then collects all the trimmings as it goes and converts the grass into dried pellets that is can then turn into fuel to power itself along.

The secret is in its internal small biomass gasifier which is a furnace that is able to convert organic matter into fuel and in this case – gas.

The mower is autonomous thanks to its in-built proximity sensors which will stop it bumping into things around the garden or people. It is also able to self-navigate and follow a course setout using its onboard GPS tracking unit.

Husqvarna MZ61 – Briggs 27hp vs Kawasaki 24hp

I came across this great thread on Lawn Mower Forums that talks about the relative strengths of the Husqvarna MZ61 Briggs Stratton versus the Kawasaki power unit options.

The to and fro in the forum starts with the HorsePower output of each engine, and as the Briggs has 27hp versus the Kawasaki 24hp, does that make it the better choice?

Needless to say, how many horses you have is not the key criteria, it’s what you do with them that counts.

The Kawasaki engine unit, while having fewer horses, has greater torque and it’s the torque that gets you through the tough stuff! Torque is the measure of rotational power that is applied, and of course for a lawn mower the application is in driving a spinning blade. Therefore the torque is what gives the blade the power in spinning and improves the mowing capability.

There is a reliability question that also arises in the debate with some saying the Briggs has more problems in-life than the Kawasaki unit. This forum thread is not a definitive survey of these engines and as they say on the web ‘your mileage may vary’.
