After Scully's untimely miscarriage amidst the task force hunt for Mulder, Mulder is returned from his abduction— implanted with three hybrid embryos, this time much more alien than human. With the two intercepted by Colonist forces before the pregnancy can be terminated, Mulder comes to his own decision to bring the infants to term, receiving visions of a timeline where they hold they key to humanity's resistance. In this uneasy limbo, beset by dangers within and without, Scully grapples with her dashed dreams and her relationship to motherhood, while Mulder is incited to consider his own place within manhood, womanhood, and everything beyond and in-between.
