We feeling silly tonight!!
August 10
In the dystopian future of the 35th century, a man is selected to go back in time to prevent a catastrophic event whose consequences ultimately ruined the future world. Launched into the timestream, he is caught up in empyrean fire, the strands of energy that make up time itself. Crash-landing near Astro City in late 1985, he spends the remainder of the year learning to master the empyrean forces which had suffused his body, and to alter it to change back to a more normal appearance. Desperately working to control his powers, he barely succeeds in time to prevent the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, the event he has been sent to amend. Upon placing the Challenger on the ground, he is besieged by the media, who press him for details on himself. Briefly dismissing himself as just "a Good Samaritan", he departs immediately to better figure things out. Eventually deciding that he could do a lot of good with his powers, he adds a cape to his outfit and takes the name "Samaritan", basing himself in Astro City. Additionally, he uses his Zyxometer, a living bio-computer shaped like a diamond with tentacles, to create a civilian identity for himself as "Asa Martin" (an anagram of "Samaritan"), a fact-checker for Current, a news magazine based in Astro City. With the quiet his job affords, Martin programs the Zyxometer to do his daily duties at Current, enabling Samaritan to simultaneously continue performing his heroics and protecting the people. However, this causes Asa to appear to his colleagues as standoffish. His sense of duty has led to a similar problem as Samaritan, leading him to attempt to ameliorate it with what he considers non-essential activities. For example, he consents to attend dinners and banquets held in his honor, lest he seem arrogant by those he serves. The plaques and trophies given to him at these events end up in an alternate dimension, nicknamed "the Closet", that he can access. The Samaritan first appeared in Kurt Busiek’s Astro City #1 (August 10, 1995).
One day I will have time to sit down and draw Reader in all these beautiful gowns that I've been saving in my phone 😢... One day
This is a redraw of Miss A from The Letter People.
The drawing on the left is from 2008; the drawing on the right is from 2024. My drawing skills have improved over the last 16 years.
Why Must We Want What We Cannot Possess?
feminism and crap
"But an important contrast exists between the first and third examples, and the second. Women in England, like men, may be ignorant of their own value and strength; but as the heart of darkness reveals the inner power for evil of every human being, so it also reveals a reception of the power of women unprecedented in European cultures"
Bleh. There. I'm done for the day. I wrote a whole two paragraphs (more than a page), modified my thesis, and contested traditional feminist interpretation of Joseph Conrad's writing. I hope you're proud of me when I turn this paper in Ms. A. I'm actually trying really hard for once.
Teaching and LDC.
On Friday my teacher was not there. They did not send a sub. I taught alone. It could have been worse. No one got hurt. My kids did all the worksheets and assignments I gave them. They were quiet (before they sent the problematic students back in) and listened to the read-a-loud on the carpet. I also got some support from the special ed teacher (Ms. V) who has the classroom right next to ours. However, I do value the rapidly deteriorating remains of my sanity, and thus do not wish to repeat the experience again anytime in the near future. This weekend provided a much-needed break. I went down to the beach with my family and just relaxed. I also got a new iPhone! This is exciting because I no longer have to get lost and cry. I also might even start replying to text messages and checking my email. It's possible. In other news, I am no longer service coordinator. I found out today that we have no literacy coordinator, so I told Matt and Lindsay that I felt that role was too important to have cut out and I wanted to do it. They seemed to agree (especially considering the fact that no one really knows what service does anyway). So instead of having a service coordinator, we plan to incorporate service into all of our other coordinator roles. Today and tomorrow the whole corps is at LDC, which is a whole lot of long trainings. Usually I wish I were back with my kids on these days, but after Friday I don't mind the break so much. I get to see all my friends and escape from the windowless confines of Winston. The whole corps also got free tickets to see Won't Back Down today. It demonized teachers' unions and had huge plot holes. I didn't even cry, which is a pretty bad sign considering how hard they tried to manipulate your emotions. But that's okay. There was free soda and popcorn. I'm only going to be in my school two days this week. Monday & Tuesday are LDC and then on Thursday I have BURST training, which is the literacy intervention program used by 1st-3rd grade corps members. I may be tired, but I can handle two days.
