"why am i not surprised to see you here?” hazel asked as she approached the ginger haired girl in the garden, eyeing her for a moment as she tried to get a read on her. while she and eve weren’t the best of friends, hazel did like her—their shared interest in magical creatures was enough to spark something that resembled a friendship. truthfully, hazel considered eve to be a friend—she just wasn’t entirely sure if eve shared the sentiment. the younger girl was a mystery, and hazel found that she was almost impossible to read.
“would you care if i joined you?” she questioned, tilting her head to the side as she flashed the girl a warm grin. eve was alone, sure, but hazel still felt that it was only polite to ask first. maybe eve needed a moment to herself, or maybe she simply didn’t want hazel around—both were perfectly acceptable, though admittedly hazel would be saddened by the latter. without waiting for a response, hazel quickly added an explanation to her question, hoping to make things feel less awkward. “i mean... you looked kind of lonely over here by yourself, so i just kind of thought i’d... drop by.” unfortunately, this only served to make things feel increasingly awkward.
