Pawpaw vs. Hickory Leaves
The area we were hiking yesterday is heavily populated with both hickory and paw paw, both of which have very long leaves. I’ll be seeking pawpaw fruit in late summer and autumn (elsewhere, foraging is prohibited in the park).
The easiest way for me to quickly tell the difference is that pawpaw leaves (on the left) are alternate and hickory (on the right) are opposite:
