Meet the Avs (part 3/26): Nathan Mackinnon
Nate Mackinnon is a 21-year-old Canadian ice hockey player for the Colorado Avalanche, born on September 1st, 1995. Heβs 6 feet tall, 205 pounds, and a center who was drafted first over all in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Before the start of the 2016-17 season, he was named alternate captain along with Matt Duchene and Francois Beauchemin.
Nate made his NHL debut on October 2nd, 2013, on home ice to face the Anaheim Ducks. He pulled two assists and was youngest player in NHL history to dress for a regular season game. He scored his first goal October 12th, 2013, against the Washington Capitals. He then went on to win the Calder, being the youngest to ever win it. Nate recorded his first NHL hat trick on February 22nd, 2015, against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Nate was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but grew up in Cole Harbour. He has a sister. Prior to being drafted to the NHL, he played in the QMJHL with the Halifax Mooseheads. While in Halifax he accompanied the team on their journey to their first Memorial Cup in 2013. He led the team in points and won the award for the tournaments MVP.
Internationally, Nate has represented Canada few times. He won gold with Canada in 2015 during the World Championships. Nate finished the tournament with 4 goals and 5 assists. He also attended the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and represented team North America.
