Torment of Hailfire (4th Level, Evocation)

Casting Time: 1 action

Range: Self

Components: S, M (a vial of alchemist’s fire, or the tongue of a dragon)

Duration: Concentration, up to 1 min.

Classes: Sorcerer, Warlock

As you cast this spell, ghoulish purple fire manifests in your palm and matching streaks of fire begin to rain down from the sky. At the start of each of your turn’s for the spell’s duration, you can choose one creature that you can see within 90 feet. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 2d8 fire and 2d8 necrotic damage on a failed saving throw, or half as much on a success. In addition, any creature that begins its turn within 60 feet of you during the spell’s duration must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the start of its next turn.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, at the start of each of your turns you can choose to target one additional creature for each slot level above 4th.

So, in the latest HOU Story, Endure, we saw that despite their ability to reform from most lethal damage the Bolas gods (Hour gods?) are killable if thoroughly cremated, meaning there is a chance that we will see the original forms of these gods if we return. However that relies on two assumptions, 1. that whatever Bolas did to change/control them is undone when properly kiled and 2. that the gods are capable of reforming after their deaths in one way or the other. We won’t know whether the first point is true until a revisit to Amonkhet but I am fairly confident that we will see a return of other gods in some form seeing how vestiges of their power remain in their weapons and their temples (if the light we see emanating from the remains of each monument in the “Desert of the _____” cycle) and when their names are invoked by their remaining followers.

Well, there’s also the incredibly important third requirement which is that the other Hour gods die. We’ll have to wait until next week to see whether the story team decided to leave that plot thread dangling or not although I don’t see why they would when one of them is left mostly purposeless if Bolas takes the army that he left the Scarab God to wake up. Like, at least the Locust God still has command of locusts to do whatever but the Scarab God doesn’t seem capable of controlling regular zombies/mummies so besides a big sword, what else will it be left to do on the plane that can’t be accomplished by substituting it with one of the large horrors that we know wanders the plane naturally.

Continuing the trend of people voicing complaints about HOU cards; opened a non-foil The Scorpion God in my booster box and noticed two errors with the card: -The card itself is miscut; the card's x-axis being higher than the norm (which is noticeable mostly from the holostamp being applied correctly). -The black ink on the card art is ridiculously high, with the detail on the shadowed (right) end of the art completely lost.

What is Nicol Bolas' goal?

So we know what Nicol Bolas’ plan for Amonkhet was, ie. assemble an incredibly strong and unquestionably loyal army. Okay I get that. But why? Bolas is probably one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse at the moment and appears to be being set up by the story team to be a nigh-unstoppable force. Maybe I’m just getting the wrong impression of his power from all the discussion regarding the inevitability of the Gatewatch’s curb stomping etc. etc. but there doesn’t seem to be many things that could even stand in his way now, aside from another copy of himself of course.

So what the heck does a he need an army for? This isn’t the type of thing you invest this much effort into accruing and then proceed to do nothing with. It could point to the fact that there is something he needs it for or that he thinks he may fail to achieve without it, which I think is far more interesting to think about.

So what does this army do for him? Is it to be the ultimate security guards in his private plane to protect him at vunerable times? Is it an invading force for taking over planes? Or is there someone/something as or even more powerful than himself that Bolas is preparing to confront and defeat? The possibilities are intriguing.

Of course, Bolas could be just be afraid of nothing and is just accruing a force that can do all the work for him that he could do himself but just doesn’t want to. Maybe all he wants to do is read books and conquer worlds but one requires his personal attention and the other just requires sufficient numbers of mindlessly loyal, near-invulnerable zombies.

What I’m saying is, Nicol Bolas could just be really lazy.
