thanksgiving soft!boys (part 2)
“sam and i are going to run a 5k on thanksgiving morning,” cas says monday morning while dean is halfway through his morning bagel.
“‘m sorry,” dean says, once he chokes down his mouthful of carbs, sesame seeds, onions, and cream cheese. “it sounded like you said that you were running.” cas nods, expression blasé as he looks at dean over the rim of his mug. “on thanksgiving morning.” cas nods again. “on thanksgiving morning.”
“you won’t be required to run,” cas says, accurately predicting dean’s next worry. “though it would be nice to have a ride.”
“so i’m not running. or walking. or partaking in physical activity.” cas shakes his head. “but i do have to get out of bed early on thanksgiving morning.” cas gives him a what are you going to do about it kind of smile. “is there a reason why you and sam are doing this?”
“other than the enjoyment of physical activity?” fuck, cas is weird. cas shrugs. “proceeds from the entry fees go local charities--food banks, counseling services, lgbtq services.” cas finishes his coffee and puts the mug carefully in the sink. “it just seemed like it was the best alternative to you know...everything.” he waves his hand vaguely in the air.
“you’re real cute, you know that right?” dean asks, kissing cas’ cheek just above his morning stubble. he keeps his lips there until he feels cas’ cheek shift under his lips with the spread of his smile.
and that was all well and good monday morning, but now it’s thursday morning and it’s 8 am and dean is standing in lawrence’s downtown area freezing his nuts off. his only solace is the fact that jess is standing next to him, clutching a cup of coffee and shivering. “why are they doing this,” she moans, tucking her nose into her scarf. “why do they hate us.”
“don’t know,” dean says, putting his arm around her shoulders. it looks like he’s comforting her but in reality, he’s just trying to leech any excess body heat she’s putting out.
“we didn’t even have to be here. we could have lied. stayed home. guessed when they would be finished. been here at the finish line and no one would have known the difference.”
“why are we good spouses,” dean moans, and doesn’t realize that he’s said anything wrong until jess’ sharp elbow digs into his side.
“only one of us is a spouse here, unless you’ve got something to tell me.” her eyebrows are trying to disappear underneath the edge of her beanie. “dean,” she says slowly, gleefully, “do you have something to tell me?”
“no!” dean snaps, he almost pulls away but reconsiders--he needs the body heat. “maybe,” he relents after several long moments.
jess must sharpen her elbows daily, because even through four layers of clothes, dean feels it dig into his soft midsection. “stop,” he whines, squirming away from her razor-bow, as he’ll call it from now on. “it’s possible,” he says, biting out each word with immense reluctance, “that the conversation has been floated about a legal ceremony in which we pledge some sort of commitment to each other. it is possible that ring sizes were discussed.”
jess’ squeal of delight is muffled by the scarf wrapped around her lower face, but her shoulders jostle dean as she jumps. “yeah yeah, don’t fucking tell anyone,” dean mutters. “It’s supposed to be a secret.”
“what’s supposed to be a secret?” a warm cup of coffee is pushed into dean’s hands by his mother, who was not supposed to be here. when dean brings this fact up to her, she smiles, cheeks turned pink from the cold. “well, i had to be here to support my boys! now what’s the secret?”
“you know, if i tell you the secret, it kind of takes away from the allure of it being a secret.” mom rolls her eyes, but doesn’t push and dean’s grateful for it. he’s not ready to confess his secret ring shopping yet. it’s too close, too personal.
lucky for him, cas rounds the last corner in a comfortable pace towards the finish line. he’s dressed in his running clothes--tight pants, tight jacket, and black hat that pushes down his hair. his cheeks are flushed, but a faint smile plays across his face as he crosses the finish line. dean’s dick gives a very inappropriate lurch in his pants.
“hey babe,” dean says once cas makes his way over to them. cas pecks his lips quickly before he hugs jessica and then mom. “kept this for you.” dean produces a water battle from his hoodie pocket. cas takes it before usurping jess’ place under dean’s arm.
“where’s my husband?” jess asks, craning her head over the crowd, not that she needs to in order to find her jolly green giant of a husband.
“he’s about five minutes behind me,” cas says, nuzzling the tip of his nose into the thin scrap of skin of dean’s neck. dean shivers, but doesn’t bother to push cas away.
“i went to the coffee shop and got you a cider for when you were done.” mom pushes a cup into cas’ hands. he cracks the lid and inhales deeply. his eyes flutter shut and a soft, appreciative moan escapes his lips. dean’s dick gives another stir.
“ah mary, you’re a gem,” he answers, and he might have said something else, except jess spots sam emerging from a pack of runners and decides to announce her excitement by jumping as high as her legs can take her and waving her hands with such enthusiasm that several bystanders move away, shooting them alarmed looks.
sam jogs up to them and accepts jess’ kiss, dean and cas’ hug, and his mother’s cheek kiss. he grabs at his cider and sucks it down.
“do you want to get our times?” sam asks, looking like he wouldn’t mind staying out the chilly morning air for the rest of the day.
“cas i love you but if you keep me out in this cold any more i swear to god i’m going to kill you,” dean mutters close enough to cas’ ear that he can’t be heard by the rest of his family.
“i think that dean and i are going to go home and change before we head over to the house,” cas says, absent-mindedly stroking down the possessive hand dean lays over his stomach. “i need a shower before i’m ready to be around people.”
a shower. now that has possibilities. dean tucks his nose against the back of cas’ neck, relishing cas’ resultant little shiver.
“we’ll see you later,” dean promises, tangling his fingers with cas’. his fingers brush up against cas’ bare left ring finger and a shiver that has nothing to do with the cold rushes through him.
turns out there’s a lot to be thankful for.
