Spicy Chicken Pot
//MuiKee
Hong Kong: Mui Kee
11/26/16 Mong Kok
It was my mom that led us on a foodventure this time. She wanted to try this congee place she saw on a TVB food show and I was craving congee so I was definitely game.
The OG stall was situated atop the Fa Yuen Street wet market in Mong Kok. Obviously this place is popular as it was already the late morning on a weekday and every seat was taken around the stall. Good thing this Hawker Center-style dining room means you just have to take a few more steps to get to an open table so it’s not a big deal.
It looks like they still have their original sign:
The front:
One of their Legends:
Thousand Year Egg and Lean Pork with Chinese Doughnuts
Unfortunately, they were out of chow mein so we went with just the doughnuts. The congee consistency was slick the same way everybody does it. Another stall that throws shredded green lettuce on top for textural contrast, still not used to it. The real standout here was the pork, perfectly cooked and the same every damn time.
Conclusion The setting inside one of HK’s oldest Hawker Centers set the ambiance, but what makes Mui Kee special is their history. A legacy that has expanded to brick and mortar locations elsewhere in HK and even to Singapore. The food is consistent, delicious, cheap, and all the locals know it. There are a lot of mediocre congee shops in HK, don’t risk it if you’re in Mong Kok and come get a classic.
