Mukotsu, the Spoilsport

A bite-sized analysis.

It’s well-known that Mukotsu interrupts Jakotsu’s first fight with Inuyasha with his poison, but it seems to be a pattern with him.

This is how Mukotsu is initially introduced in the manga, and depending on what version you’re reading, Jakotsu says that Mukotsu is interfering again.

Translation is debatable, but what makes me think this behaviour is consistent is the anime’s version of Mukotsu’s introduction. It happens while Sango and Kohaku are fighting.

You were taking far too long, so we came instead.

In his limited time in the series, Mukotsu interrupts and steals two battles. One from Kohaku, and one from Jakotsu. 

Mukotsu, in general, doesn’t seem to respect the authority of anyone other than himself. We’re left to assume he respects Bankotsu and perhaps Renkotsu, but we’re shown he doesn’t respect Jakotsu or Naraku— as Kohaku warns Mukotsu that he is being watched by the Saimyōshō, and Mukotsu is unaffected.

Because of this, and his blatant disrespect towards Jakotsu, and Jakotsu’s complete lack of surprise when Mukotsu interferes, it’s fair to assume this behaviour is not unusual for him. 

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Mukotsu is such a battle thief. Mukotsu’s style of battle hinges on completely taking away the autonomy of others, specifically rendering them immobilized; unable to move and completely defenseless, whereas all the other members tend to give their opponents a chance to fight back.

Among the members of the Band of Seven, Mukotsu ultimately displays the poorest sportsmanship— from theft and greed and acting on his own whims to outright endangering a comrade, it’s clear he’s not much of a team player.

I'm almost finished with s5 of inuyasha and I didn't remember at ALL how weird some of the villains were. Like sometimes they were so suggestive, they had me stressing for the main characters😭, specially Jakotsu and Mukotsu with Inuyasha and Kagome, they were weird WEIRD with them. We don't talk enough of how close they were of getting assaulted
