warren burgess is fablehaven's punching bag tbh like he can't win. book two when we meet him? cursed by a revenant. regains his faculties only to be stabbed by a minotaur, bitten by poisonous snakes, and hosed down in acid by a two-headed panther. book three? survivor's guilt and shadowification baby!! book four? this man gets gored by a flying deer and then trapped in an extradimensional storage room playing yahtzee for months. he cannot win and i love him for that.

no offense to the rest of you but the beyonders fandom is my favorite to be in. i love that there's just a server where the same five of us sit in a circle and read this middle grade fantasy series and have unreasonably in-depth discussions about the magic systems, character mindsets, incredibly minor canonical details, rating character deaths, and the logistics of giant crabs

my favorite thing about mutual distrust which is also my LEAST favorite thing about mutual distrust is i apparently put so much work into plotting and writing it and making sure it was as canonically accurate as possible that i straight up forget it isn't canon 75% of the time. i'm like yeah you know. don't you remember that time when ferrin went to the beyond with jason. and then i'm like wait that didn't happen i made that up

Lena's death in Grip of the Shadow Plague is even more brutal when you consider the fact that in the past, she and Patton just had a huge fight and the last time he saw Lena from his timeline he left things on a bad note; the added fact that Lena in the future looks exactly the same as Lena from the past so there's very little degree of separation there for Patton; and finally when you think of how Lena told him the fight they had was the last time she could remember him ever raising his voice at her. And then consider a Patton who has gone forward in time and witnessed his uncle's mistake (from a situation canonically compared to his and Lena's) come back in such a disastrous way, a Patton who has watched Lena die in front of him, a Patton who has come back and knows exactly what will happen to her in the future, trying to reconcile all that with a life where they had a huge fight over something like fucking drapes. No matter how much and how well he loves her, he will always know how she's going to die. She's been dead since the beginning...You know! It recontextualizes shit man. I'm sad.
