        the sheets of rain have long since penetrated every protective layer of clothing, his skin cold as the air that rips through, spraying the droplets against the house in what sounds to peter like firecrackers being set off as they crash into the window. he should say something to him, anything. a simple goodbye at the very least despite the suspicions that might arise, it’s not too late yet. too late for visitors, or too late to turn back ? he shudders at the thought, trying to make out if he actually saw his friend’s shadow in the window, or if it’s a trick of the light and the plaster of wet blonde hair that obscures his sight. if he simply stands here for too much longer, then he’ll undoubtedly attract attention, his worn-out boots squelching as he shifts his weight, glancing down the street as someone scurries to an opposite corner down the block. the sense of unbelonging now more prevalent than ever as the phantom aches rattle through his bones to remind him why he’s here. what he’s doing. why he’s doing it. fingers tighten instinctively around his wand in a deep pocket of his cloak, peter sucks in a sharp breath, looks back to the window. maybe he’s waiting for a sign. maybe, you’re delaying the inevitable, coward.

                    a reaction that mirrors her   (  late  )   mother snarls and snaps inside her chest at the insinuation that she would ever dare to vent her emotions so publicly.    it’s unbecoming.   one of the kinder statements placed into her mouth, held in her steel trap jaw. whatever emotion she might have allowed to graze the surface is mercilessly fed to the ferality her mother instilled in her over the course of her childhood. a distraction from the way it seems to gnaw on the bones of her passive existence. she is a breck, now the only breck, and that reputation cannot be sullied nor can she allow her shoulders to sag under the weight.

                   ❛  i don’t cry. it’s a poor form of self pity, and it doesn’t help anyone, least of all me. it won’t raise the dead, or comfort the living.   ❜     she feels like a parrot, like a puppet, her mouth full of words that are not her own. but now there is no one alive left to blame for them, or for the sharp line of her spine, or the way her expression feels hard and bitter. she still says them.     ❛  i don’t intend to start now.  ❜

his eyes study her for what must be mere seconds , but he learns a lifetime’s worth of knowledge from it regardless. how often has he done this ? yet still he learns. and he never tires of it. it’s dangerous to indulge. it’s more dangerous to want to.

but that may be a personality trait as opposed to an objective observation. the right way would entail letting her go. or never letting her leave. the right way would be any way other than the one he wishes to take. but he isn’t a prince , and this isn’t a fairy tale. and to be good or right is to be someone other than who he is. 

that isn’t an option. not anymore.

his fingers find the edge of her jaw , tracing a path he may as well have worn to the bone by now. he’d never thought of himself as a foolish boy. he wouldn’t dare. but when he looks at dorcas , he knows it to be true. he knows looking her in the eye is the most foolish mistake he has ever made. 

and yet , he continues to make it every chance he gets.
