I thought i had, but i just discovered that i had not written a blog on Oey Tjeng Sit before and there is now every reason to write a blog on this self taught artist, because i recently added a wonderful multiple to the collection of http://www.ftn-books.com. It is the Loerakker multiple on the occasion of the presentation of the monograph on the artist.

Amsterdam based pharmacist-artist Oey Tjeng Sit (1917-1987) invited visitors of an art fair to throw paper balls toward tin cans, decided to set fire to cages filled with balls of newspapers, or to fill warehouses with the same second hand paper material. He liked to add bizar titles to his works such as ‘Bicycling against the wind one might forget the invention of the wheel’, ‘An artist who is fashionable is a victim of good taste’ or ‘The only thing I know is that I trust blindly a feeling that promises me secrets.’ Oey Tjeng Sit, whose name means Yellow Clear Solid was born in Purwokerto (Java) at the foot of the Klud Volcano, that erupted just at the time of Oey’s birth. Born in the Year of the Dragon he found himself released of the duty to take care of his parents; that is why – after visiting high school in Bandung – he traveled to the Netherlands in 1938 in order to study pharmacy. Twenty years later he opened Apotheek Oey (Oey Pharmacy) at the Prinsengracht opposite the Anne Frank House. He took away the pills and potions out of the window display and started a small art gallery there. One of his nicknames was a ‘Dragon Man with a Dada Passion’ who showed the art work of colleagues and friends which gave him another epitheton: ‘the nestor of Amsterdam window art’. Oey’s work as an autodidact is characterized by a wide artistic range of disciplines: after a period of surrealistic drawings and paintings he started making wood and linoleum cuts, collages, assemblages and editing books through his own editorial ‘The Finger Press’. In his collages, often together with Chinese ink and brush, as well as in his installations he used frequently news papers, of which he wanted to extend their short life, tied as they are to daily actuality. The newspaper was a source for many questions for Oey ‘Can we measure the weight of printed news?’ and ‘What contains more wood than newspaper letters?’ ‘If there is an order, then is it a temporary one.’

Oeys oeuvre – light-hearted, playful with a subtle feeling for the hidden esthetic quality of daily life – can be a long lasting confirmation of these words.

I contacted a collector of whom i knew he had sold me several in the past and he could help me with 6 more of these Scholte multiples. For me the first confrontation with Scholte’s art was at the gallery ‘t Venster where he had a show on the floor below where Piet Dirks was having his first Rotterdam gallery exhibition. I was shown around by mrs van Gennep who told me that Scholte was a rising star in the art world. Rob Scholte is one of the great dutch contemporary artists. He was on the rise when there was an assassination attempt on him. His car was blown up and in the vent he lost both his legs. This story is known by almost everyone in the Netherland. People who know something of the art scene in the Eighties know that Scholte, Klashorst and Ploeg were the names that rose to fame and of these three Rob Scholte was picked up by important german galleries. Since the bomb explosion it took Scholte a very long time to come back as an artist, but finally he managed to make a come back and have his art in the spot light again, although it never became as important as before his assassination attempt. But his name was important enough to be invited for a “Kruidvat” project.

The shops of Kruidvat had the idea to make important art and artists financially accessible to their customers and Scholte was invited to participate. Scholte made silkscreens on canvas of collages of lucifer boxes. Which were sold out immediately after they were published and presented in the Kruidvat stores. http://www.ftn-books.com has managed to acquire 2 of these highly collectable art works of which the last one is now available at www.ftn-books.com

Robin Winters (1950)

Robin Winters has had his exhibitions in the Netherlands. Both in museums and galleries he was presented in solo exhibitions during the 90’s. Von Menschen und Mäusen

Hin und wieder lerne ich Frauen online kennen. Meistens handelt es sich dabei um "Leidensgenossinnen". Einige leiden an einer Borderline Persönlichkeitsstörung, andere haben "nur" Depressionen. Jetzt habe ich auch eine Frau kennen gelernt (der ich näher gekommen bin), die - so scheint es jedenfalls - auch an einer Multiplen Persönlichkeitsstörung leidet (diese Aufspaltung in sog. Innenpersonen wird fälschlicherweise sehr oft als Schizophrenie bezeichnet!). Ich selbst leide übrigens nicht daran. Es ist nicht so, dass ich nicht aufgeschlossen genug oder gar intolerant wäre - mit Sicherheit nicht! Nur glaube ich, dass es mir schwer fallen würde, mich in so einen Menschen (zumal in einer Beziehung) ausreichend hinein versetzen zu können. Hhhm, man wird sehen, was kommt...
