The good thing about moving is that you have an opportunity to sort through everything and find treasures either completely forgotten or which have been sought for ages. This book, Callings by Greg Levoy, falls in the latter category. I must have read it at least 10 years ago in the process of seeking framework itineraries for my journeys. One short passage stood out to me and has resonated through the years: “Elsa Buckner, at the age of 22, heard the call of adventure and made a vow: every five years she would stop whatever she was doing and do something different. For more than 50 years she has done just that. She’s worked in accounting, magazine production, advertising, sales, business consulting, and the jewelry business, to name a few. She has written musicals. At age 55 she traveled across Europe with a knapsack on her back, and she got married at 70 for the first time. At the start of each venture she marked her calendar for five years hence and, true to her word, moved on – though she says she is making an exception for her marriage.” This passage resonates because my own life has taken a similar path, though more inadvertent (I refer to my most success methods as those in which I “follow my nose” and not necessarily at near five year intervals (though that rough range instinctively feels right). What I’m saying is that for some, there is one clear linear path of purpose in their lives. And, there’s nothing wrong with that at all. Yet, there are also those of us who wander and intuitively “follow our noses.“ In our culture (American/western) the latter often is not honored so much as the former. If you are such a nose follower: I see you, I hear you, I’m with you. And I’m also with Elsa regarding her exception: I commit permanently to a partner who is willing to join me in doing the hard work that continuously defines successful relationships. Bonus synchronicity: The initial inside pages reveal a ringing endorsement from one of the grand priestesses of storytelling and journeys: Clarissa Pinkola Estés. #rainforestmind #multipotentiality #multipotential #multipotentialité #multipotenziale #multipotencialidades https://www.instagram.com/p/CPbkY25DOQeB6ru8ArWKKma-xucSb9WOiIYZh80/?utm_medium=tumblr
