In a everyone live au, imagine saru being nervous about Misaki ding out he somehow is dating Mikoto. At some point he even cancels on Misaki before deciding at the last minute he needs to get it over with… only to find his own king entangled inappropriately with Misaki.
Imagine Yata’s probably been having the same issue, how the hell is he supposed to explain this relationship that even he doesn’t understand XD For that matter, Fushimi probably doesn’t understand his own relationship with Mikoto. Imagine they’ve been in one since like around the betrayal time too and Fushimi has been avoiding calling it a relationship, but making up with Yata has actually helped him to reconcile his own feelings and admit that he loves Mikoto. The only issue now is he has to explain this to Misaki and he’s all hesitant because he feels like this could somehow ruin the friendship even before they’ve really repaired it, like how would Yata act knowing Fushimi made Yata his enemy but was making out with the Red King. And weirdly Fushimi is still on edge about the hero worship thing, like it’s okay for him to date Mikoto but Yata praising Mikoto makes the old jealousy flare up and part of him wants to snap that he’s closer to Mikoto than Yata could ever be. Fushimi is certain that he’ll somehow make a mess of this and therefore it’s best to just not tell Yata, except obviously Yata will figure it out eventually and isn’t it best if Fushimi’s the one who tells him.
He keeps avoiding it though, Fushimi will plan to tell Yata and then cancel at the last minute. Fushimi starts to wonder if Yata knows something though because Yata’s been cancelling on him a few times too, but then he rejects that idea because idiot Misaki can’t keep a secret to save his life. One day Fushimi chickens out again and as he’s leaving the office he passes Hidaka, who’s surprised that Yata isn’t with him. Hidaka says he saw Yata walking into S4 earlier and assumed he was coming to see Fushimi, Fushimi has this panic moment thinking Yata found out. He decides that he needs to actually make himself be honest with Yata, as much as his entire being rejects that idea, and he’s going to find Yata just as soon as he delivers this report to Munakata. This of course leads to him finding Yata quicker than expected, as Yata happens to be in Munakata’s office and they happen to be making out on Munakata’s desk. Yata freaks out when he sees Fushimi all wait wait I can explain, Munakata is completely unbothered and says he will leave them to have an honest discussion between friends. Also imagine Fushimi absolutely milking this, mocking Yata for making out with the Blue King he supposedly hates so much and to think you’re such a bold virgin. Yata is tongue-tied trying to explain, which lasts right until Mikoto climbs through the window because Fushimi was late for their date and Mikoto came to find him (and also throw away some of Munakata’s puzzle pieces while he’s here, because why not). Yata is like wait wait Mikoto-san and Saruhiko and Fushimi does at least have the grace to look a little abashed, clicking his tongue and he mutters that he was just about to tell Yata.
Since I didn’t even get close to finishing my AU, here’s my second contribution to the K Rarepair Week, for the prompt ‘nightmare’!

AO3
Blood. There was so much blood. It was flowing freely out of the large chest wound, in sluggish waves in time with a heartbeat that without a doubt would stop soon. Fire was still burning around them, but Munakata didn’t care. This couldn’t be happening. Not again. He couldn’t be completely helpless again as someone he cared about died right in front of his eyes.
Except he could. He wasn’t a king anymore, after all.
He’d just been walking home from a date, his boyfriend Yata Misaki beside him, holding onto his hand and talking excitedly about the movie they’d seen, when someone had decided they needed revenge on the former Blue King.
It didn’t really matter who it was, not someone Munakata could remember, but it was a strain, one with dangerous powers and violent friends, and Munakata was powerless. Unarmed, too, like a complete idiot. But there hadn’t been any time to think. Yata had zeroed in on the strain in no time and attacked him without hesitation.
Munakata had screamed at him to run away, this wasn’t his fight. He didn’t care about Scepter 4, and the strain didn’t care about Homra. It had nothing to do with him.
Of course, Yata had ignored him. Charging ahead with flames bursting out of his fists, he’d taken on the strain. Munakata didn’t have the time to argue with hi as multiple people attacked him at once, though thankfully they were all normal people. Somehow, he managed to steal a knife from one of them and hold his own, but it took him a while to knock all of them out.
By the end of it, he was breathing hard and sorely missing his King powers, but he only spent a millisecond lamenting their loss. He whirled around to where he could still hear the strain and Yata fight, just in time to see the strain’s invisible scythe pierce a whole into Yata’s chest. He should have been able to dodge or block that attack, but only a weak rest of flames was still licking at Yata’s body, testament to how much strength he’d lost since the destruction of the Slate.
Still, Yata grabbed hold of the strain’s wrist, a pained grin spreading on his face as his hand caught fire again. One last time, until there was nothing but a marred corpse left of the strain and he didn’t pose a threat anymore.
Munakata was completely frozen on the spot as his boyfriend turned toward him, too much blood on his shirt and an all too familiar expression on his face.
Then he collapsed, hitting the ground with a sickeningly loud noise that reverberated through the absolute silence around them, and finally Munakata’s legs let him move again, jolt forward to cradle his boyfriend in his arms. Yata felt heavy, but way too small. Too fragile. Nothing like the vanguard bursting with energy he was supposed to be.
“H-hey, don’t make such a face now… I don’t feel too bad, I’ll be fine, this is nothing to Homra’s vanguard!” Yata’s voice was weak, but determined, and it didn’t sound like he was lying. He must’ve been in shock, Munakata concluded, and it was sparing him the worst of the pain and the reality of the situation. He knew he should tell him the truth, but his tongue felt like sandpaper in his throat and he couldn’t form a single word.
“It’s cold though,” Yata mumbled, his eyes losing their focus more and more. Munakata pressed him closer, holding him tight until the warm breaths against his cheeks stopped and a lot longer, not wanting to let go even as the lifeless body in his arms turned cold.
Eventually though, he had to move. Not that he was about to let go, but he figured he could at least get Yata into a position where Munakata could carry him home. As he lowered him though, he couldn’t help but look at his face, bruised and dirty, lifeless eyes staring into nothingness.
Munakata’s stomach churned.
-
With a silent gasp, Munakata jolted awake. It took him a few seconds to reorient himself, but soon enough, he realized he was in his own bedroom, and his boyfriend was sleeping soundly right next to him, very much alive. He was grinning like an idiot, too.
Just a nightmare.
He took a moment to steady his breathing and calm himself down. Just a nightmare. None of that was real. No need to get upset.
It might as well become reality though, a deceptive voice inside of his head whispered, you’re powerless now. There’s nothing you can do to prevent it, and you know full-well it will be entirely your fault when it happens. You’re so selfish, keeping him by your side when you’re so weak.
Munakata shook his head to get rid of the intrusive thoughts. The dream was completely unrealistic. He had taken precautions. Scepter 4’s Special Ops always knew where he was, and he could call for help with the press of a single button. Besides, he most definitely would have called an ambulance instead of sitting around like an idiot. In the dream, the action had made sense, but in the actual world, Munakata would never lower Yata’s chances of survival with such a stupid move.
Of course, he could never rule out the possibility that there were too many enemies and they would get overwhelmed too fast…
But it was no use fretting about it now. With a sigh, Munakata heaved himself out of the bed and made his way to the bathroom. He blinked at the sudden brightness, once more cursing his absent king-status. Little things like this never fazed him back then.
As his eyes slowly got used to the light, he searched for some stomach medicine, hoping it would calm his still upset stomach and help him go back to sleep. He had work tomorrow, after all. He couldn’t afford a sleepless night. It would only make the chances for accidents skyrocket.
Once he’d found and taken the pills, he went back to the bedroom, only to find his boyfriend sitting upright in bed, a worried expression on his face.
Too bad, Munakata had hoped he would simply sleep through this, tomorrow morning Munakata would have been collected enough to ignore that anything happened at all. But no such luck, Yata had good ears, and it was a miracle if he didn’t wake up when Munakata moved around so much.
“Did you have a nightmare again?” Yata was getting sharper when it came to deciphering his emotions as well, and frankly, Munakata didn’t know whether he liked that or not.
Still, he shook his head. “Not about what you think.” There was no point in denying it, so he didn’t. It wasn’t the first time they’d been in this exact scenario. Though usually, it was because his subconscious was still dwelling about the past instead of fretting over the future.
“Not… exactly, at least,” he conceded, remembering the all-too-familiar posture and the nature of the fatal wound. And the way the blood would flow out… it had all been way too similar to be a coincidence. Or real, for that matter, he reminded himself.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” It was a question Yata asked every time, even though he was denied almost always. Only during the second night Yata had caught him haunted by his dreams did Munakata actually take him up on the offer.
The first night, as Munakata had refused, Yata had simply held him close silently until he’d fallen asleep. But the guilt had been eating at Munakata too much, he couldn’t stand being consoled by one of Suoh’s own clansmen while he was unaware of it. So he’d spilled his secret, fully expecting Yata’s face to turn hard and unforgiving, as the death of his former king was still something of a sore spot between them. It wasn’t something that could be forgiven easily.
But while Yata had looked conflicted for a moment, ultimately, he’d sighed and pulled Munakata close anyway. “It’s okay,” he’d whispered, almost inaudibly. He hadn’t sounded like it was okay, but Munakata took it, knowing this was already more than he deserved.
Every other time, it had been the same dream jolting him awake, and it had been enough to say so, and the quiet consolation followed again.
Tonight was the first time it was different, and Munakata was at a loss about what to do. Judging by his confused expression, Yata wanted to know, but Munakata knew he wouldn’t be angry either if he kept quiet. Should he though? The worry had been plaguing Munakata in his waking hours enough already, maybe it was time to tell Yata about it. But it was all too likely he would be hurt in his pride, after all, Yata hated nothing more than being thought of as weak. Just like Munakata, he wasn’t exactly dealing with the loss of his powers well.
In the end, he decided it was better not to keep everything locked up inside. It only made things worse in the long run. Still, his voice was devoid of emotion as he sat back on the bed and recounted the basic story of his dream. He didn’t include his reactions either, but from the look on his face, Yata could guess them anyway.
When he was done, Munakata simply fell silent, and for a while, neither of them moved or spoke.
“You know, if that happened, it wouldn’t be so bad.”
Munakata’s head whipped around immediately at that. What? Did Yata honestly think so little of his own life? Did he have way worse issues than Munakata had thought? Was there something essential that he’d missed?
“Ah,” Yata seemed to have noticed his own mistake, “I mean, it’d suck that I’d be dead and all, but…” He rubbed his neck nervously. “Now that the Slate’s gone, it feels like we could die any time. I just thought, if I could at least protect you, then it wouldn’t have been in vain.” He paused for a moment, and it seemed like there was more he wanted to say. But his voice was a little bit more light-hearted when he spoke again. “Though it would be kind of a downer if it’s Scepter 4’s enemies, they should at least hate Homra as well, so I can show them not to mess with us!”
It was clearly an attempt at distraction, but Munakata couldn’t help the tiny smile tugging at his lips. Perhaps a bit paradoxically, he loved listening to Yata blabber on about how amazing Homra was. Munakata shuffled back under the sheets, gaze never leaving his boyfriend’s face, glowing with excitement as he described how he was gonna ‘kick all those strains’ asses’.
“Oh,” Yata finally noticed that he’d laid back down, “you wanna go back to sleep? You think you’re okay now?”
There was a distinct sense of worry in his voice as he laid back down as well, eyes carefully searching for emotion in Munakata’s expression. But he’d calmed down, and whatever was left of fear or worry was too little to be noticed.
“I will be fine,” he reassured Yata, “after all, I have my strong boyfriend here to protect me.” He said it like it was a joke, but that didn’t stop Yata’s face from significantly heating up, noticeable even in the dim light of their bedroom. Nor did it stop his fingers from reaching out to intertwine themselves with Munakata’s, or his voice from being completely serious as he answered.
“Yeah, I will try with all my might.”
Some time ago, such a proclamation would have been amusing at best, but right now, it made Munakata’s chest constrict and his heart beat faster than was optimal for achieving sleep. There might even have been an answering blush creeping onto his cheeks, but he was sure it wasn’t extreme enough to be noticed with the current limited light.
Still, Yata’s warm hand in his own and his relaxed face right in his line of sight, Munakata had no trouble falling back asleep.
Ok, but MunaYata is extra hilarious in the big brother Munakata AU 😂 like Fushimi has had to live through Muna asking for Yata intentions and Yata’s “you brother is so weird” only to find the awkwardly making out post rok.
This would be very funny but also I wonder if Munakata would even be willing to go there in this AU, like even if he ended up having some weird attraction to Yata I 100% don’t see him going for it if there’s any chance at all that Fushimi likes Yata too. Munakata is just way too devoted a big brother, he would put his little brother’s romantic happiness over his every time if given the choice, so if Fushimi is in love with Yata Misaki then that person is completely off limits to Munakata. Maybe post-ROK it’s clear that Fushimi still likes Yata as a friend but has romantic aspirations elsewhere because it’s Everybody Lives and Mikosaru occurs so Munakata is suddenly free to pursue his weirdest romantic urge. Yata wouldn’t even know how this happened either, like one minute he’s complaining at Saruhiko’s stupid weird big brother for being overprotective and then the next they’re making out in Munakata’s office and Fushimi walks in on them. Yata is red-faced and stuttering, thinking Saruhiko will be pissed and how will he explain this, there’s a good explanation too really. Fushimi however takes the whole thing in, crosses his arms, and then walks right up to Munakata and says it looks like he needs to ask some questions about big brother Reisi’s intentions with Fushimi’s best friend.
So I have a secret Yata/Munakata fascination. And I’m tired of pretending I don’t. So to try and keep it a little realistic imagine it happening in the AU where Yata is a member of S4 (I saw the short story and now I need mor)
Give in, admit your fascination with rare pairs! Imagine in this AU Yata has a similar kind of hero worship for Munakata as he does for Mikoto in canon, I could actually even see his feelings towards Munakata being similar to how he felt towards Fushimi in middle school — that this person is so smart it’s actually really amazing and Yata is just dazzled by him even if he secretly thinks his King is kinda weird. Imagine Yata is basically the only clansman outside of maybe Awashima who will go on bonding experiences with Munakata too, like he’s just happy to spend time with his King (and Yata’s both not terribly bright and very sturdy so when Munakata is like ‘let’s go to the beach and fight sharks and forage for food’ Yata just thinks cool, it’s like a survival TV show, I’ll kick the butt of any shark that comes near me). As a consequence Yata is able to have a lot more one on one time with Munakata than most of the force and he gets to see Munakata’s dorky side a lot more, Yata’s surprised by how weird and fun his King can be sometimes.
Meanwhile maybe in this AU Fushimi defected to Homra and Yata is dealing with that betrayal, and Munakata is like subtly trying to nudge Yata towards a reconciliation. In general I could see Munakata keeping Yata on his toes a little because sometimes he seems like a curious kid but then he’ll be all insightful and Yata doesn’t entirely know how to deal with that, kinda like how Yata feels with Totsuka in the series. Imagine Munakata inviting Yata to daily tea and praising his abilities to complete his missions but also sneakily asking how things are with him and Fushimi and how is Yata feeling in general, does he enjoy his missions. Munakata can of course be doting in his own way and Yata feels off balance at those times, like he sees his King as this untouchable amazing force but sometimes Munakata seems very human and it gives Yata fluttery feelings. Assuming Mikoto still dies in this AU too imagine Yata being the one to reach out to Munakata in the aftermath, the S4 guys feel like surely Captain will be fine and even Awashima doesn’t want to pry despite her worries, while Yata is absolutely the type of person who would storm into Munakata’s office and tell him he doesn’t have to feel bad about doing what he had to do. Munakata is surprised by Yata’s appearance but then he laughs and says truly Yata’s place in S4 is important, because who else would so boldly come to his side this way and speak so honestly.
The shame continues… power bottom/(soft) dom Munakata with Yata?
Imagine despite his virginity Yata assumes he will be taking control during sex, like okay sure he isn’t experienced or anything and Munakata is older than him but still, Munakata is a frilly little nerd what’s he gonna know about sex. And then of course the moment they’re naked Munakata is gently but firmly lowering Yata down on the bed and straddling him, promising he will take it slow and guide Yata through the proper movements. Yata is completely overwhelmed, he keeps feeling like he should be taking control but Munakata is just so natural with the whole thing, taking charge as easily as he does within his own clan, and Yata can only follow along with Munakata’s movements. I like the idea that Munakata’s S side comes out a little too, imagine him getting Yata in the mood by just a lot of teasing and touching, lowering himself on Yata and just sitting there and explaining the sensations Yata will soon be feeling while Yata squirms and whines between gritted teeth for him to just start moving already. When Yata tries to buck his hips up Munakata adjusts slightly and keeps Yata down with only his hands, not allowing Yata to make any movement until Munakata feels properly prepared for it. Despite being the one technically on top Yata is totally overcome by Munakata’s presence, Munakata knowing just what to do to keep Yata always on the very edge of pleasure without letting him go over until Munakata’s decided he should. Yata can’t believe he’s being bested so easily by this bastard but he’s also probably more into than he expected, like he’s complaining but he’s also feeling every bit of what Munakata’s doing and it’s absolutely driving him wild in the best ways too.
Yk how in rick and Morty, summer’s friend was crushing on her dad (I wanna fuck your dad. OH REALLY) imagine saru and misaki hanging out and misaki starts to notice more things about munakata and saru has to be the first one to notice a crush is forming. Then randomly misaki realizes “oh I want your king!” Poor saru has never known the embarrassment of your friend crushing on your parent
I just imagine Fushimi being filled with disgust and if you want to drool over Captain please do it on your own time. Yata isn’t exactly happy about the whole thing either though, the idea of having a crush on the Blue King is like viscerally awful to him…but also why is that guy so interesting. Since Yata has been hanging out with Fushimi a lot more often now he also as a consequence ends up hanging around S4 more often, which is how he ends up seeing Munakata more often. At first Yata is on guard and low key hostile to Munakata because in his mind this is still the guy who stole Saruhiko away. Imagine what starts endearing Munakata to Yata is actually the way Munakata treats Fushimi too, like Munakata is always praising Fushimi’s skill and Yata’s over here visiting like damn right Saruhiko is amazing, I guess me and the Blue King agree on something. Or Fushimi will be working when he needs to go to lunch with Yata and Yata’s prodding Fushimi to take a break already, and then Munakata shows up and says the same thing and Fushimi finally sighs and locks his computer. Yata gives Munakata a grateful look and maybe his eyes are lingering a little too long, Fushimi decides it’s easier for him to pretend he never saw that.
Then as they hang out more Yata gets to see more of Munakata being super smart but also a total dork, imagine them somehow ending up having an excited conversation about ninjas one day and Yata tells Fushimi that okay maybe his King isn’t so bad after all. Fushimi rolls his eyes and clicks his tongue, he doesn’t want to be a part of this. It’s not until one day when there’s a Strain situation that Yata finally realizes he’s somehow crushing on the Blue King, like Munakata steps in to help a struggling Yata and Fushimi against some super strong Strain and gets a little injured himself. Fushimi is being all irritated about being saved and trying not to act like he’s concerned in the aftermath but Yata is all over Munakata wondering why he put himself in danger like that. Munakata assures them that he’s fine and when he eventually heads to the infirmary Yata is standing there awkwardly like ‘Saruhiko….I kinda think I…okay, this is weird but your King…’ and Fushimi is just like shut up, I don’t want to hear it I’m not going to be part of this, you can handle him yourself.
I’ve surprisingly had a few MunaYata asks, they are rare but still exist! I feel like this would be so weird for Fushimi specifically, having his best friend date his boss. Though it’s probably not any less weird for Yata himself, who has no idea what he sees in Saruhiko’s weird dork King and yet here he is dating the guy. I think Yata would absolutely wrestle with having any attraction at all to Munakata too, because I could see him looking at that as kind of a ‘betrayal’ of the Red clan in a way. Especially since Yata has such high respect for Mikoto, like here he is always proudly proclaiming Mikoto as his King (and later Anna) but he’s all attracted to the stupid sexy Blue King. He would definitely need to reconcile the idea that he could be into Munakata without seeing Munakata as his King, like Yata is still a Red clansmen it’s just that Munakata happened to be the guy he fell in love with.
On Munakata’s end I think he would be rather amused and somewhat bewildered by the whole thing, because Yata is probably not someone that Munakata would have considered his ‘type.’ I could see Munakata being attracted to the parts of Yata that are similar to Mikoto, like just that fire inside and a desire to live freely, while also being aware that Yata is not Mikoto and has his own interesting traits. Imagine Munakata finding it just cute when Yata is being stupid, Yata’s probably a little self conscious at first about being with someone this smart (even more than Saruhiko smart, and much more confident and clear about it) but when he realizes Munakata likes the impulsive part of him that just blurts out his feelings he gets less nervous. The two of them feel like such opposites but imagine them somehow dating anyway and both of them are ultimately kinda equally confused but enjoying themselves anyway.
