just realised that i haven't done a snupdate in a minute!! ï๑𓂃𓂃

hermes has been moved into his new home for a couple weeks now and is very cozy and joyous! she has had a couple different setups now and is a biggg explorer everytime things change up. he is a massive fan of carrot and ofc the og parsley (not rlly sweet potato though i tried ;-;)

(but actually some optimism on fandoms and queer media)

took a break from my rewrite to draw my boy jonathan bc i remembered this scene and how seen i felt by it. i WAS will. i needed to hear jonathan's words when i did- and the message was executed so fucking beautifully.

-and had some thoughts.

because these SAME writers wrote the "and me" scene????

and are suddenly handling representation so clumsily, and in general turning these established and complex characters and relationships into caricatures of who they were, who only have needs and wants and relationships when it is necessary for the plot.

i genuinely think the duffers were just trying to get the show over with. (yes ideally they would have stopped until they had passion again, but ig thats not how netflix works. or maybe they were just ready for the paycheck. or wanted to please the crowd. or got lazy. or ran out of ideas. or got greedy. or never gave a shit anyways.)

but whatever it was, it makes me SO fucking grateful for fandoms.

i feel like this is the thing we need to remember when we get queerbaited. its obviously evil and gutwrenching and unfair. but a small bit of hope is in the knowledge that there are SO many storytellers around us in fandom spaces who DO and WILL tell queer stories, and there is a MASSIVE audience searching for them.

like its so beautiful that even if you dont give a shit about your show anymore and betrayed its core principles for greed etc etc there WILL be gay people on tumblr rewriting your shitty straight boyfriend into a deeply repressed homosexual with layered, complex feelings on love, gender, and fear. whose themes and symbolism they explore with nuance in their 200,000 word fanfics and 90 minute youtube videos- that they thought were theories but were really stories. their own stories. and better stories than you told with more passion than you had and lost.

and if we can make such beautiful fanwork based on a story that never actually had us in mind, then think about the work we can do on our own- so ig this is also a reminder to SUPPORT ARTISTS AND MAKE ART.

because we didn't get the story we wanted represented, but we did make a story. a better one. like

WE MADE THAT SYMBOLISM.

WE READ INTO THE CHARACTERS AND CREATED A MUCH MORE COMPELLING NARRATIVE.

not because we were tricked or delusional but because WE TELL GOOD STORIES.

and we DESERVE good stories that represent us. and we need to support each other in telling them FOR OURSELVES. we cant rely on the whims of billionaires for scraps of representation, or to pick us from the pile, and keep forcing ourselves to become more and more palatable just to be profitable. but making (and funding creators to make) the media we need. (and compete more with these amoral corporations who only want us for engagement)

and ik we're already doing this but idk. we need to keep reminding ourselves to make the work because we want to see it. and we want to feel seen. and we CAN. tbh thats what makes the internet (not the corporations, but the people and communities) so beautiful.

idk i just think it would be so cool to have all of these theories about a show to be RIGHT one day. to actually feel SEEN by creators is fucking incredible, every piece of queer (and otherwise marginalised) media is a fucking triumph. but the only way we can have more is by being creators and supporting creators we love and feel seen by.
