Murderbot company fabric designs are up!

I redid the black design to smooth out the center ring's middle bar, then realized there are two other colors also used on the suit skin so like a complete mad lad I made two more, using the original design with a black background. They're only digitally proofed for now, but I'll get some sample swatches soon so we can see what it looks like in person!

My friend @allenemrys and I cosplayed ART (her) and Murderbot (me) for a local con this weekend!

We both made our own designs, I was mainly drawing from the book covers while she made a completely original design for what is supposed to be a humanoid feed avatar for ART, in case it ever needed such a thing. Honestly, there are so many cool details in her design, I am just so in love with all of them, like her version of a Logo for the Perihelion that she hand embroidered on both the jacket and a patch for the shirt underneath.

She said she'd make a more detailed post on the design process, so look for that, if you're interested (provided that she has the time to actually make that post, which is not always a guarantee).

Ideas for Things to do and say, if you cosplay Murderbot at an Event.

"No hugging." (Your friends will be irritated, I guess.) Or if you want to be more polite: "No hugging, please." Avoiding eye contact with everybody. Saying to nobody in particular: "This is exactly like episode 357 of The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon, when the captain alarms the crew that the kitchen area has just exploded." (That's not a quote, I made that up.) No smiling. (Yeah, I know that can be tough at an event.) Complaining that your configuration change was overdone (thanks to @penig for that one) Asking random people if they have yet watched episode 517 of The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. Saying, "I have to check the maintenance bay" or similar and abruptly leaving. This may be useful, if somebody talks on and on, but you actually have to leave for a panel at the event or something else. Staring into the distance (as Murderbot looks at its feeds) Standing around awkwardly and very upright. Leaning your head against a wall for a moment and closing your eyes. -- If you plan to wear an FFP2 mask or similar to the event (because Covid is not over), you might write "SecUnit" on the mask and tell people, "This area is contaminated." Or you might answer this, if questioned why you are wearing a mask. I may write more into this list later.

My mood while walking with friends on New Year's.

I thought about maybe I should give up the walk and not go, but I decided to stick to the previously planned plan.

And yes, the image of the Murderbot fit perfectly into my mood that evening.

The walk was exactly what I expected: too many people, too much noise, too many lights, too many children.

Though one little girl made me smile (you can see her in the second photo). She touched my hand and carefully. squeezed my fingers to see if I was alive or not. By this time, I had been standing motionless for several minutes, watching the movement of the ferris wheel. I don't really like riding on carousels, but I am fascinated by the movements of these huge structures with sparkling lights.

It was unexpected, but it was surprisingly pleasant to feel the warmth of her fingers through the glove. I lowered my head to look at her, and she exclaimed enthusiastically: "You are alive!”.

I nodded my head in confirmation, and she continued:

"You are so beautiful!"

I couldn't think of anything else how to respond to this "Thank you" with a slight delay, and then her parents dragged her away by the hand, telling her not to pester people.

This little incident turned out to be surprisingly suitable for the mood of this evening and left a strange, warm feeling.

Sec Unit Just wishes to watch it's media.

I have given up Cosplay mostly, but now I have ideas for a Murderbot or SecUnit Cosplay.

Which would mean that I have to build the whole thing from scratch because I don't think they sell such cosplays somewhere. I could wear it at our local SFF convention next June or so. When I went there for the first time in 2005, I actually wore a generic android cosplay I had made myself with recycled materials (also spare parts from computers and other stuff I found in the trash).

If I can really do the cosplay, at the convention, I would tell people, "no hugging please" and avoid eye contact while talking to them. I actually don't like hugging much from people who are not really close to my heart, so that would be rather good.

Due to my disability, I limp. As a SecUnit, I'd say, that somebody shot my foot and then I didn't have time to visit the med bay yet. And I would wear an FFP2 mask, like I always do in crowds, but I could adapt the mask a bit so that it would fit the cosplay. Thinking a bit more about this, I might also wear more casual clothes instead of this armour-like thing. It could be a closet cosplay. I mean, Murderbot sometimes tries to blend in with the humans. (So far, I have read books 1 to 4 of the series.) I definitely would need an interface thing at the back of my neck, but that would be rather easy to do. Or maybe something else to show that the character is not a human being.

I don't have the looks of Murderbot. I am just 5,3 feet and I am overweight, but as they say, Cosplay is for everyone. 😀

--- Update on this, see also comment by @penig I guess I am settling for the closet cosplay. I actually have a black hoodie sweater and I might have already found some cargo pants in an online second hand store. And then I can focus on the non-human details so to speak. I have to admit, the specific look of the cosplay is almost secondary to me, I want to actually walk around and play the character at the convention. I could also irritate people by asking them if they have watched the latest episode of "The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon". 😅

Unofficial merch round two! Staying up until 4am because I had an idea in the shower edition!

It hit me that I should take the motif I'd isolated of the company logo and turn it into fabric for cosplayers, then on inspection I realized the version they have on the undershirts is sorta an inverse of the normal design! Cue my sitting up with my hair wrapped in a towel, adding circles and bezier arches over the spaces of the logo until it looks reasonably like the clothes version, and getting that tiled and spaced approximately the right size. I still have to go in and adjust the spacing for one set of icon repeats to be even, then proof it, but we should have material for all y'all planning to cosplay PresAux, or be your own survey team!
