Konomineji (国見寺) – Temple 27 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage
📍 Mt. Konomine, Kōchi Prefecture | Amaterasu Omikami (天照大神) & Jizō Bosatsu (地蔵菩薩)
High in the misty mountains of Kōchi Prefecture, at an elevation of 450 meters, lies Konomineji (国見寺), one of the most challenging yet rewarding destinations on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. A place of devotion, healing, and perseverance, this temple’s origins trace back to the era of Empress Jingū (201–269 CE), making it one of the oldest sacred sites on the pilgrimage.
✨ A Place of Miracles & Healing Konomineji is deeply connected to Iwasaki Yatarō, the founder of the Mitsubishi conglomerate. His mother famously undertook a 20-kilometer pilgrimage here, praying for his success during the turbulent final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. The temple is also home to Ishimizu (石清水), a sacred spring renowned for its healing properties, believed to cure all illnesses.
🌸 A Temple Through the Seasons In spring, the temple is framed by Yoshino & Yaezakura cherry blossoms, creating a stunning display of pink and white. In autumn, golden hues bring a different kind of magic, blending with the deep greens of the surrounding forest.
💡 Why Visit Konomineji? ✔ Breathtaking Views of the Pacific Ocean ✔ Rich History & Spiritual Significance ✔ A Tough Yet Rewarding Climb – perhaps the hardest in Kōchi Prefecture!
🏡 Pilgrim Lodging: 📍 ¥6,800 per person per night (Dinner & Breakfast Included) 🛏️ Private Japanese-style rooms with shared baths.
