Pairing: Charlie Bartlett x Murphy Bivens
“Mr. Bivens. So nice of you to join us,” the daycare instructor said flatly.
Charlie looked over at the man that just walked in. He was wearing a leather jacket and a scowl on his face. He walked over to his son, who was wearing a leather jacket of his own and had a fohawk. He looked quite adorable.
“Sorry,” the man said, though he didn’t seem sorry.
The daycare instructor rolled her eyes. “Mr. Bivens, Mr. Bartlett, as you know I called you because Murphy and Ryan got into a fight,” she said.
Charlie had a pretty checkered past himself. What, with getting kicked out of every private school he’s been to, and then when he sold prescription drugs at that public high school, but he still didn’t want his four year-old son fighting. Charlie looked over at Ryan, who was wearing a suit jacket with a regular red shirt on underneath. “You know better, Ryan,” Charlie said.
Murphy also had a pretty checkered past. In school he always got in fights. And he always won them. “Why did you punch him?” Murphy asked.
Murphy Jr. looked up at his dad. “I was flirting.”
“That’s not how you flirt, bud,” Murphy said.
“It’s how you flirt.”
Murphy’s face turned a little red. Murphy had told stories about how he’d fight the boys he liked, but he didn’t think his son would follow pursuit.
“Mr. Bivens?” the daycare instructor asked.
“I-I never…” Murphy said.
The daycare instructor sighed. “I will leave this as a warning, but if it happens again there will be consequences,” she says, standing up.
Charlie and Murphy stood up as well and shook the daycare instructor’s hand. “Want to get some ice cream?” Charlie asked as he and Murphy walked out with their sons.
“Sure,” Murphy shrugged.
–
“So…Murphy Bivens. I never saw you as a father,” Charlie said, eating a plastic spoonful of Superman ice cream. Back in that public school where Charlie sold drugs, he had an accomplice. And his accomplice was Murphy. They hadn’t seen each other since graduation night.
“Yeah, well…” Murphy shrugged, licking his chocolate ice cream cone.
“So is he Whitney’s?” Charlie asked.
“Yeah,” Murphy nodded, “And he’s Susan’s?”
“Yeah, but we divorced two years ago…last month? Yeah, two years ago last month.”
Murphy nodded. “Whitney left four years ago, a few months after my son was born. She doesn’t really want anything to do with us,” he says.
“I’m sorry, Murph,” Charlie says.
Murphy shrugged again. “It’s alright. She isn’t the long-term relationship type of person.” Murphy takes another lick of his ice cream. “But what about you and Susan?” he asked.
“I like someone else. So it didn’t really work out,” Charlie says.
“Do you like it?” Ryan asks. Charlie and Murphy turn their heads to look at their sons.
“Do you?” Murphy Jr. asks.
“I asked you first,” Ryan says, standing tall.
“Well my question is more important,” Murphy Jr. countered.
“It’s coffee flavor. Of course I like it, I’m way more maturer than you,” Ryan explained, eating a big spoonful. Charlie couldn’t help but laugh at his son’s disgusted expression.
“Nuh-uh!” Murphy Jr. exclaimed. “I’m more maturerer than you!” Murphy Jr. then proceeded to take an even bigger bite than Ryan had. This time both Murphy and Charlie laughed at the little boy’s disgusted face.
“Do you guys want to get a different flavor?” Charlie asked. The two boys looked at each other and then nodded.
–
“We should do this again sometime,” Charlie said to Murphy as the four of them walked. Ryan and Murphy Jr. we’re up ahead, competing about whatever.
“Yeah,” Murphy nodded. “Want to go to the movies this weekend? Without the boys?”
Charlie’s face broke out into a wide grin. “I’d love to, Murph.”
“Cool,” Murphy smiled, punching Charlie in the shoulder.
