I saw some anti-LGBT+ sentiment this morning in regards to the lovely fictional characters most call Jessie and James.
I just wanna say that all headcanons are valid.
Telling people that characters can’t be LGBT is an anti-LGBT action.
That is not the same as simply not agreeing with someone. If one person headcanons a character as trans and another headcanons them as cis, that in itself is not an LGBT+ action. Telling someone that a character can’t be LGBT and/or that their headcanons are invalid, that is an anti-LGBT action.
Headcanons don’t need ‘evidence’, (even though many do). We all interpret characters differently. You can look at a character and be like “this one’s coming out as non-binary in 10 years”and that’s cool.
This discussion has been brought up before, especially in regards to shipping Jessie and James.
I’m pointing out that people under the bisexual or asexual umbrella work just as well as them being straight. Or they are a gay family. Or they are both trans and don’t like each other all that much. Or whatever. They are fictional adult characters with a history of over 20 years together. There is a lot of room for interpretation here.
Reiterating that you can call them straight without being a dick but if you insist that this is the only ‘good’ headcanon, you’re being a dick. An anti-LGBT+ dick.
This post is to show my support for all the LGBT headcanons we have for our favorite characters and to remind people that a true ally doesn’t say “I’m not homophobic, but…” before giving their opinion. It’s a red flag.
