@amischiefofmuses (continued from Jeff!)
The ever-closing proximity of the Land Shark is enough to set a throughline of nervousness through Groot's diminutive form, but even as a sapling, he has the distinct impression that Jeff is more curious than hungry. Besides, those teeth are made for slicing meat, not chopping trees, and the odd finned creature is not looking at Groot with the eyes of someone gazing at food.
When the pot tilts up, Groot lets out a small indignant squawk and throws his tiny arms out to compensate for the sudden loss of balance. It's nothing trained into him, he's too young for that; it's a matter of instinct. The rim of the pot clacks against the surface of the holotable when Jeff allows it off the tip of his nose, and again Groot lets out a yelp – the vibration transmits unexpectedly up through his roots and sets the inside of his mouth on edge.
Groot barely has enough time to adjust himself and regain his orientation when Jeff leaps up onto the table, continuing to poke at the pot and then – then at Groot himself. The contact is surprising, and Groot still feels reasonably sure that Jeff isn't looking at him like food, but it's a little intimidating to be confronted with a stranger so up close and personal and… big. Of course, all the other creatures Groot knows are big, and many of them far larger than Jeff, but he at least knows the big people that come aboard the Milano. And for those he doesn't know, generally they're accompanied by someone he does.
Groot sways a little at Jeff's touch, still unsure what to make of the Land Shark, but surely if the odd creature intended to harm Groot, he would have done so in that moment. The gentle contact tells Groot that this is curiosity at work. So, too, does he feel curious about Jeff.
A tiny voice erupts from his mouth. "i am groot?" And he reaches a minuscule, bud-covered hand to touch Jeff on the outstretched paw in turn. He's immediately struck by how soft and smooth Jeff's skin looks, yet how rough and coarse it actually feels. If not careful, Groot imagines he could easily get leaves caught on Jeff's body. But moreover, Jeff is warm to the touch. Something that looks like it should be at home in the sea, Groot would more readily expect to feel cold or at least cool, like the water Gamora and Rocket feed into his pot… but instead, he's as radiant as any of the Guardians.
In Groot's mind, there can really be only one logical conclusion to this interaction. If the Land Shark doesn't see Groot as food, and he isn't prowling away in search of food, then he must be bored and lonely.
In short? Looking for a friend.
"i am groot!"
Groot throws his arms up and resumes dancing to the music playing over the PA system, flashing a big grin at Jeff as he bounces and bobs to the tune. Surely a creature as fascinating and well-balanced as this Land Shark appreciates a good musical number – and maybe he can even dance!
