Around 800 people attended "One Night. Two Parties. Three Eras!" at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Saturday night. Kelli Lemon hosted the event that was billed as "Travel through space and time from ancient China to 20th-century Black America to modern-day RVA, all in one night." #DJLonnieB #LegacyBand #VMFA #KelliLemon #RichmondMag #RVA #MuseumChic (at VMFA Virginia Museum of Fine Arts)
I Woke Up Like This I woke up with anxiety this Monday morning, as every artist & entrepreneur does posing the following questions: 1.How I am gonna get any of this done? 2. Should I give up & just play it safe? Where am I going to get resources (i.e. money, money, money😂)? 3. Where I am going to get the support? 4. Is all the pain and anguish worth it? 5. Why am I doing this again? Then my self absorbed bubble bursted with a tweet from my young entrepreneur cousin @noxiouscali needing to set up a meeting go over concepts & ideas. I slowly pulled my head out of my ass & realized the importance of this date June 19th. It commemorates Juneteenth: "Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States." [Read more on www.Juneteenth.com] I pretty much told the baby inside of me to go to the corner & shut it down fairly quickly. Today's lesson being whatever we are all doing today we are doing for more than just ourselves. Lead in legacy in whatever you set your sights on doing. You never know who is watching you. You are feeding more than just yourself but the upcoming generation. You're not meant to take any of this with you. Paintings: by prominent visual artist Cynthia St. James Stay Woke & Fabulous! Werk Week I stumbled across Weeksville many years ago for a performance by Pharoah Monch in the gardens. I was actually taken a back that as a native of Brooklyn, I never knew this place existed. All the while enjoying hiphop I was approached by a beautiful African woman who asked "Are you Senegalese?" I said I was born in Brooklyn & my family is from the south. She smiled "I think you are. You have the features." Ever since then I was always approached by African people as being Senegalese & even weirder I told my father of my story. He said he was told he was as well. As a designer to [discover] your brand & what you stand for, you must first [uncover] yourself. You will have no clue what you are about if you do not understand your own history. My stumble years ago at Weeksville has helped me as a teaching artist on recon mission to gather info for students but heightened my senses that I am also doing a recon mission on myself. My father is a patternmaker & business owner in midtown. The women of Weeksville ran their own businesses making clothes. Here I am doing the same thing. I think the best father's day gift I can give my pops is just to continue legacy. Legacy. Heritage. Blackness. Power. "Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn’s largest African-American cultural institution, is a multidisciplinary museum dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century African American community of Weeksville, Brooklyn - one of America’s first free black communities." Wishbone Trust is something many of us give away like a tossed penny - free of charge but we often forget to fill ourselves with it first. We dispense it expecting those to honor it but they never measure up to it's worth. Trust, when broken, we are left hurt not just from betrayal but due to the inability to rise up to the greatness we often see within them.
