Birch polypore (Fomitopsis betulina)
Throughout the summer, both in Scotland and back in Cambridgeshire, I made it a mission to find and dehydrated large amounts of birch polypore - a very common and easily identified fungi that, while it is technically edible, its benefits are far better enjoyed via a tea. I've been drinking this once or twice a week all winter and am so happy I took the time to build up a store!

love that Hannibal sees Eldon Stammets like “you must use mushrooms to connect to Abigail” and is like “wow... great thought eldon! love that idea and i’m going to try it!"
episode seventy-eight: mushroom tea 🍄☕️✨
special thanks to the gf @fucking-tara for doing most of the cooking on this while i was working on another recipe!! 💖💖💖
Mushroom teas and drinks have really exploded in popularity recently but I am screaming at people to please be aware that:
IF YOU USE INSULIN YOU SHOULD NOT BE INGESTING STUFF WITH CHAGA OR REISHI!
Chaga has a bunch of amazing attributes including its ability to help lower blood sugar. But that means for those taking insulin or other blood sugar medication it can be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS because of this. Reishi has the same issue!
Both Chaga and Reishi also can affect blood clotting so if you are having surgery within a month or have any other issues this would complicate please avoid them!
Reishi can aid in lowering blood pressure but if you are on blood pressure medication already, it can cause your blood pressure to drop dangerously low!
High doses of chaga can also cause kidney damage. I myself have harvested chaga several times and then tinctured some as well as ground some for tea. When I give it to folks I always make sure they know you SHOULD NOT BE DRINKING CHAGA TEA/USING THE EXTRACT EVERYDAY!
I've said this once and I'll say it until the end of time: herbal medicine is still medicine. It affects your body through specific compounds and mechanisms and is not exempt from the due diligence one must do when starting any kind of other new medication, including possible side effects, interactions with existing medication, and possible allergies. (Don't get me started on making sure people using SSRIs/SNRIs don't use St. John's Wort at the same time.)
If it's something you're taking consistently, if its at all possible, please please please consult a medical professional. I know not everyone has access to medical care like that, but at the very least please do extensive research and err on the side of caution.
Do you have mushrooms in the Silvergrove that people put into tea?
Of course! Several kinds, in fact. Are you feeling lethargic? Or does your tongue feel fuzzy because you licked a sprocklerock before it was ripe? Or does the sight of the Moon make you sneeze? There's a mushroom tea for that!
Honestly, the mushroom shop here in the Silvergrove is one of my favorite places - have you ever been to a Moonshadow village's understump level before? Ah, it's a treat!
You can actually hear the slightly off-key circus music, because the specially planted melodaisies are always playing it down there. And the clottin' candy is to die for... if you eat it too fast...
*reconsiders* Just... take a Moonshadow with you if you ever descend to a village's understump level, just to be safe, hmm? You'll be fine.
