The current musical heterogeneity in Asian America resonates with the social diversity of the community. This makes it difficult to derive any generalities about the sound or content of this music.* I personally resist the notion of APA music because it has not had a prominent existence in practice. What’s undeniable is the presence of APA musicians, professional, amateur, performing in all musical genres. Part of my academic (and musical) effort is to conjure (however) truthful images and narratives about the lives – and music – of these below-visibility APA musicians. For now, my working definition of APA music is the music made and listened to by individuals of Asian descent in the U.S. The broadness of this definition marks the yet exploratory state of this research.

the (unwieldy) Index
This blog’s index is sorta up-to-date. Top-to-bottom, it may be one of the longest postings in all of Tumblrdom. (Of course, when I started the index, I had no idea how unwieldy it was going to become. Otherwise, I would have tried to devise a better, more organized listing of names/bands/topics.) When using the index, here’s a few tips:
1. When searching for a band name that starts with the article “the,” try searching with and without this word. For example, if you want to see postings for “the Skyflakes” at the blog, then type in both “Skyflakes” and “the Skyflakes.” [Early on in this blog’s history, I got into the habit of leaving out “the” in the tags, but other times I would include it--just one of those quirky things I did because I didn’t realize the importance of tags until much later on.]
2. The index is not comprehensive. I generally post what I like, and tend to have an aversion towards most acoustic singer-songwriters and YouTube cover artists. However, I do realize even these folks should be heard by a larger audience, so I’ll post some of this stuff from time-to-time.
NOTE: Huge credit to all the folks who have supported this blog, past & present--from those who simply “like” the occasional post to others who have suggested names of bands / musicians I should include (feel free to keep sending suggestions), and surprisingly to several artists themselves who appreciated the free publicity, no matter how minuscule. :)
...and to those of you who simply follow out of curiosity, big thanks to you as well.

Disco Fingers: cartoon-style iPad music making for Garage Band haters
In much of Western classical music for the last several centuries, it would seem the body has become disconnected from the music. Musicians were taught to use their bodies as quietly as possible, to play almost motionless. In [Schick's] performances that bodily aspect is inseparable from the music. You could say, he does bare all.
