Here’s some more of my concept notes for a Carry On musical adaptation.

Disclaimer: as I’ve said before, I am not a professional by any means, and this is a passion project. Also, ignore the fact that I switch between future and present tenses in the notes, it’s just a rough draft.

The Song/Scene concepts so far:

The opening number, “World of Mages”, to be similar to the opening number of Hamilton or The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals where it’s more to set up the plot than participate in it. Simon will be talked about instead of introduced since I want this song to show the way the majority of the world of Mages views him. It’ll touch on the Greatest Mage prophecy, and some mentions of Simon’s past victories against creatures and the Humdrum.

“Things I Miss Most”, will be Simon’s introduction, and it’ll basically be a musical interpretation of his list in the beginning of the book. To keep the pacing good when adapting to a musical format, this song will extend into the cab and end just before Simon kills the goblin.

The scene where Penny tells us about being abducted by the Humdrum will be its own number called “Dying Spot”. She’ll narrate while the scene happens around her. I also want this to happen earlier in this version than it does in the book since it’ll be big for developing Simon and Penny’s relationship, while setting up Penny’s wants to take Simon away from it all.

Agatha and Simon’s breakup is a duet called “Happily Right Now” where their lyrics are at completely odds with each other and their voices layer, similar to The First Time in Forever (Reprise) from Frozen.

Natasha sings a song called “Bring Me Peace” and it’ll be short, one to two minutes at most, just like the visitings.

Lucy doesn’t get a full number for her visit, but her magic motif plays, faintly mixed in with the visitors motif, and you hear her calling out for Simon.

Baz sings a song called “Hopelessly” which, surprising no one, is about being in love with Simon. (Which gets a reprise right before Simon kisses him in the fire)

The moment where Simon is giving the Humdrum his magic gets a song called “Going Out” that mix Simon’s magical motif with the Humdrum’s, until both cut off, showing that the magic is gone

The finale(before bows) will be called “Carry On” and it’ll cover everything the Epilogue does(Baz’s leavers ceremony/ball, Agatha’s new life in California, and moving in Simon and Penny’s apartment).

I haven’t fleshed out the concept that much, but this is only the beginnings of what this project can be!

OK BUT Imagine Jurassic Park The Musical

Malcolm and Hammond have one of those duet songs that are like fighting/bickering songs (Devil Take The Hindmost or What Is This Feeling style)

THE BEST SONG WOULD ABSOLUTELY BE THE ONE WHERE THEY FIRST SEE A DINOSAUR FOR THE FIRST TIME YALL KNOW THE SCENE IM TALKING ABOUT AND THE HORNS ARE BLARING AND ALAN AND ELLIE LOOK LIKE THEYRE ABOUT TO CRY AND MALCOLM LIKE STAGE FALLS OR SOMETHING BC DINOSAURS???? HE FAINTS BC HE CANNOT BELIEVE.

Ellie having a song about how excited she is to see the dinos and then having a reprise of that song when they come across the hurt triceratops and she feels really bad for it

The act I end song is when the power goes out and the cars get stuck, it’s probably a lot like Blackout from In the Heights except with more screaming

Alan has a super soft song while the kids are sleeping in the tree about how it was his dream to see dinosaurs as a kid and how amazing it is and then he comes to a realization that even through their fear, the kids are experiencing his lifelong dream and he starts to like them more and more

Hammond has a lament in the middle of act II (and a reprise of it near the end) about his dream of the park crashing down and wondering what the hell he’s gonna do next

Malcolm has an extremely dramatic song where he thinks he’s dying (but not really, he’s just being Extra to annoy Hammond and make him feel guilty)

Puppets are used for the dinosaurs probably (Audrey II and King Kong style, it’s not impossible to do)

The ending song is really soft and kind of bittersweet, not like a super loud or brash ending. It just kinda fades out and leaves the audience to reflect about the whole adventure...
