For context, I was in my bed a while back, doing my best to sleep, when I was blessed with ideas for a musical adaptation of Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I’ve only come up with basic concepts for songs/musical motifs, but I’d love to develop this concept further.
Disclaimer: I have never written or composed music before, let alone created a musical, but I’ve been interested in musical theater for years, and would LOVE to get into song writing/composition.
Here are the ideas I currently have:
Ideas for Musical Composition
Each character’s magic has its own motif, to keep the detail that people’s magic feels different when adapting the story to a Musical format
When a character sings a song it shows that the scene is in their perspective(the exception will be for casting spells and ensemble singing).
Simon’s magic motif is louder, almost overwhelming, compared to everyone else’s magic motif(I want it to linger, almost hauntingly, in Simon’s songs/moments)(I want this, and the Humdrum’s theme to be similar to hint the Humdrum’s connection to Simon)
The Humdrum’s musical motif will be scratchy, like a bow being drawn across a violin incorrectly, and as intrusive as a siren
Ideas for Scene
The scene where Baz announces his arrival back at school will have a similar framing as Regina George or Heather Chandler’s introductions where he is portrayed as untouchable and above everyone.
During the scene where Baz chants back the Dragon, he’ll cast the rhyme as a song, with the traditional melody. As he casts, his voice gets more and more tired, and his magic’s motif will get softer and softer, as if it’s running out, but when Simon gives him his magic, his singing grows strong, and his and Simon’s magical motifs will intertwine.(The entire dragon scene will be a song, with the Humdrum’s motif saturating the melody to make his presence known(like how the students can feel him in the air in the book))
Ideas for Songs
Baz sings a song called “Hopelessly” which, surprising no one, is about being in love with Simon. (Which gets a reprise right before Simon kisses him in the fire)
The moment where Simon is giving the Humdrum his magic gets a song called “Going Out” that mix Simon’s magical motif with the Humdrum’s, until both cut off, showing that the magic is gone
The finale(before bows) will be called Carry On, and it’ll cover everything the Epilogue does(Baz’s leavers ceremony/ball, Agatha’s new life in California, and moving in Simon and Penny’s apartment).
I started writing more after beginning the draft on this post, but I’m gonna save those for a more comprehensive post!!!

If you ever hear the phrase "fascism is aesthetics as politics," that's what this post is talking about.
It's not about being tough on crime, because the absolute toughest most brutal measure you could take against "crime" as a social problem is to alleviate poverty, and increase access to education, healthcare and social mobility.
It's about performing "tough on crime" as an aesthetic by enacting violence against a prop, i.e. minorities and the impoverished, who are fetishized and objectified to represent "crime." They are brutalized as punishment for crime, but never with the purpose of alleviating the problem of crime.
This is why a lot of conservatives and other right wingers can get straight up angry when you suggest things like reform or social measures to reduce crime. They don't want crime to be reduced, they want an eternal war against "crime" because it provides an arena for the righteous to demonstrate virtue by brutalizing their enemies.
this speaking as a cis person. Nothing brings me more joy seeing people find gender euphoria in becoming a mediocre representation of humanity. And I mean that so genuinely. Local boy finds joy and fulfillment wearing a cargo shorts and t-shirt combo. Local girl has transitioned to look like someone's disheveled aunt, has never been happier. Local person experiences gender euphoria rocking the world's worst bowl-cut. Without a scap of irony, this shit makes me see the wonder and whimsy in just, being a human. An average, person going through their day-to-day, is a wondrous thing? That's amazing. And heteronormativity has stripped these experiences of their joy. Like you're right, wearing a basic girlypop skirt should make my heart sing. Why not? Why are these expressions lesser because they're normal? All this to say. One thing I love about Simon is that yes, he does fight and kill without a second thought.
But then after the fact he DOES think about it and it IS significant to him. He's been groomed to kill monsters without remorse and in battles he does, but when he's talking to Penny about how he hurts people he includes those battles he fought in that.
And he states that he didn't mean to kill that dragon in one of his first battles and he still thinks about that. He doesn't WANT to fight or kill but he does because he's been told he has to
