i've been singing since before i could talk apparently, and i think that is why musical magic has been my longest-held practice—i was doing it before i really identified as a witch, when i was a child. i'm going to describe some simple healing-song methods i've used throughout my life—all of these are solitary practices, require no knowledge of instruments, and you do not need to be a good singer at all to utilize these techniques for magical means.

play a plain chord song (or use a piano, or another instrument) and hum along to the note. hum up and down, and individually focus your attention to the sensations in your face, mouth, throat, chest, shoulders, arms, then stomach. if you are familiar, try to harmonize along to the chord. this is a great meditative start for any other musical rituals.
choose songs pertinent to specific spells, and sing them to enchant these workings. when i do this, i try to incorporate a rhythmic body component (dancing, clapping or snapping, rocking back and forth, etc.), as well as starting with some kind of simple meditations or trance-entering practice. when singing, try to lean heavily into the lyrics and song, emotionally, and sing it from the heart and not to sound perfect.
as an act of ancestor veneration, when songs that deceased loved ones enjoyed come on the radio (and i'm alone), i will allow these spirits to temporarily and partially take over my throat and mouth to sing the song how they used to. it is a noticeably different sound than i typically make, and sometimes involves a lot of voice cracking if the song is far out of my range. at the end of the song i thank the ancestor for watching over me, and bid them farewell for now.
when i was younger, i taught myself to enter what is now my spirit-world work space, but at the time was more akin to sherlock's mind palace. in here i would imagine myself burning and saving cds with individual songs that i wanted to remember, then i'd put them on the shelf, press them, and sing while listening to the whole song in my mind. i still utilize a similar method for much more then songs, but when it is songs i choose ones pertinent to my life or magical goals, as a method of manifestation through imparting the song messages onto my mind.
i will sing songs as simple spells on their own sometimes. some songs out there are entirely a spell in their own right, and don't need an accompanying ritual to have an effect after magically singing it. songs can be to curse, to bless, to heal, to ward, for anything that you find a song about really.
in healing-song applications specifically, i sing songs which are pertinent to my life or magical goals aloud, while doing basic visualizations of energy flowing from my throat and mouth, around my head and body, back into my crown and root energy centers. if doing it for another person, it's a similar application except the visualization of energy goes from your throat and mouth around to the other persons crown and root energy centers.
ive found music to be a good gateway for me to practice mindfulness, especially coloring, as it can be used to progress from having a distraction, to an infrequent distraction (music stuck in my head), and using that to practice redirection in mindfulness. i utilize mindfulness a lot in my spiritual practice so i thought this was pertinent.

So, I don't know who needs to know this, but "Fireflies" by Owl City will, in fact, summon fireflies. (Sadly, I do not have video evidence; I will have to attempt gathering some at a later date.)

this theory of magic is more common in the western hemisphere and is often inter-woven with the theory of elements and color theory.
its main assumptions is that magic that is in the environment can only be used by beings when it is manipulated to do something through a medium. such as singing, dancing or crafts.
both the crafting process itself and the outcome are magic. if the intention of the maker is disrupted it can disrupt the maker.
(this is all a wip idea)

bases of expression theory - magic is energy and energy can never be created or destroyed only change form (rule of magic in setting)
-Mages closer and into the Euphorian and the Jaguar empires often carry simple instruments like drums, shakers and whistles to quickly cast magic.
-harmony and dissidence is important when trying to manipulate magic using this method. understanding the cords and when silence is needed helps elevate the potency of a spell.
(technically all music has some magic to it, but its often so weak that it is nothing more than vibration)
in order to create potent magic the caster has to be aware of what they are doing.
-it is thought that each cord of music has a unique color associated with it, as some people are able to see these colors, and a lot of people/creatures able to sense the presence of magic talk of it in terms of sound, color or feelings like vibrations. so the theory of color has some overlap with the theory of expression.
-in o’llere and o’sten they have a similar version of this where they believe magic only has five distinct forms and that anything deviating from that is dark magic. their form of expression often comes through in weaving and in an equivalent to martial arts.
-magic channeled through dance is held close to the body, and brutally physical in nature, though this form of magic is thought of as dance it can also be equated to martial arts or physical training, it is about understanding your own body and physical limitations. and through that you can move magic. this form of practice is common in o’ller and o’sten, but is also used by the hidden schools of kaliwafitsu, and by certain tribes in the islands of heaven and inilsue.
(in a lot of ways this magic is like bending from avatar the last Airbender, or I guess a monk from dnd)
-the prevalence of magical crafts through out the world is lends some credit to the theory of expression, as a person dose not need to be proficient in other arcane magics to create for use objects made to be magical
-for example a craftsman who is a master at their craft may begin to imbue their thoughts about what they are making or what kind of person will receive the object they are making, for example if a person makes a cabinet they think will belong to an important leader, the cabinet will begin to take on qualities fit for such a person, and if it finds an owner with any of the qualities it looks for it will passively strengthen such qualities. or if a hat is made to be worn by someone beautiful, it will strengthen these qualities, though this is a two way street, people with these qualities will often unconsencly seek these items with such qualities. though this magic is generally very minimal.
-items with such qualities might not nessesrly have good qualities, attributed to them, a crafter of spears might think the owner of a certain spear is a coward for example.
a way to identify such items with minor curses/charms on them is if ivelar and other spirits seem to be attracted to an item. these minor charms and cursed objects tend to have their magic fade over time if the item is not “fed” more on a certain intent.
(this idea is some what similar to Sophies magic from howl’s moving castle, but is far less potent as most craftsmen will only make a few items with a cures or charm in their lifetime)
- notably seakin rarely are able to do this and even kin are more likely to do this.
-a more potent form of crafting magic is the magic of forgery, this is a much more potent version of created charmed and cursed object magic, this is when someone actively imbues magic into an object, such as weaving cloth that will be able to endure a slash from a spear, or bend light around a person. another way to manipulate forging magic is by creating a seal for an already existing object, a seal is similar to magical “instruction” allowing the object to do things it could not before (the object is like computer hardware, the seal is the software) there is only so far you can push the change in an object.
- the seals of forging magic later on became spell tags which where mass produced spells used during the witch war. though spell tags and forging seals are often more attributed to the theory of language.
- the magic of crafting is generally under-utilized in the central hemisphere and is but is exploited heavily in the west. with a lot of passively magical objects passed around, especially in O’ller and O’sten where the trade of magic imbedded cloth has made the people of that area the best weavers in the world.
