I’m imagining a selective mute Dick, just after his parents died, when Bruce first takes him in. He’s terrified, and this normally bright bubbly child is just hit so hard with anxiety and fear and depression and he just shuts down. He barely talks, but only when he’s asked a direct question, he won’t eat, he spends most of his time spacing out.
Bruce has no idea what to do, but Alfred has seen this before, he saw it with Bruce, so he just gives all the support he can to Dick.
He puts on a face, but sometimes he just shuts down and won’t eat or talk for days. And especially after Bruce dies, Dick won’t talk at all outside the Batman suit. He just /won’t/. Weeks pass and Dick just stays silent and everyone is worried, they see him breaking like they never have before. He lost his parents all over again and Alfred can’t help him this time.He doesn’t actually talk outside the suit until Bruce comes back and his first words are ‘Bruce’ and it breaks Alfred’s heart.
