More WondLa preproduction sketches. This time it's Muthr and Meego & Friends.
Depending on how well you know me, you can probably guess my reaction to being asked to help design a cast of fuzzy little critters.

“I love you too.”

very sadge about the amazon show... eva 9 is my blorbo from my childhood so i wanted to do my little take on her & muthr
“What if Eva 8 encountered Besteel?”
As part of my WondLa Sisters in Arms AU, here’s some art I have of Eight if she ever encountered Besteel. I definitely think she’d be more hostile towards the Dorcean than Eva was, especially when she sees Besteel taking her sister to Solas. But no matter how hard she’ll fight, Besteel will always overpower Eight and take her to Solas against her will unlike Eva who chose to go willingly. Even with all those skills she has, Eight knows she can’t win a fight against him.
Also, I don’t mind answering any questions you have about this AU and questions about Eight if she were being pursued by the Dorcean Hunter.
Again, huge shoutout to @dracocheesecake and @ladyanaconda for inspiring me!

Wondla character redesigns
I wasn't aware that Wondla is based on a book trilogy until after I finished watching the show (which is only 7 episodes so far). Seeing how our main trio looked in the books got me hella shocked with the massive differences. As much as I like the designs of our main trio in some ways, I can see why most fans aren't pleased with them. I adore how the characters are designed in the books, but some designs aren't really animator-friendly. JUST FOR FUN, I decided to make redesigns of our main trio. I tried to keep in elements I like from the show & book while also adding in teeny bits of my own preferences.
Disclaimer: I have NOT read the books. My knowledge of the books mainly come from fan wiki articles.
I'm pretty glad that Eva is a girl of color in the show since one of the overall themes is fighting against your oppressor. I also hc her ethnicity to be Cuban since her VA is Cuban American (And Cuba was colonized in the past). Seeing her hair from the show compared to the book is quite a letdown! WHERE ARE HER BRAIDS!? Eva in the show must be using some kind of futuristic hairspray because how tf is her hair still intact throughout her adventure!? My idea for her hair is be gradually looser as she's adjusting to the world outside her sanctuary. Somewhere towards the end of episode 7, her braids will have bows made from Rovender's rope in exchange for the friendship bracelet she made for him out of the handkerchief Muthr gave to her.
I kept her age to be 16 like in the show because I personally believe it makes more sense for her to be 16 at the start instead of 12. 16 is closer to adulthood than 12 and Muthr's death can also greatly serve as an end to Eva's childhood as she's transitioning into womanhood.
I forgot to add this, but towards the end of episode 7, I would've had Eva keep one of Muthr's laser sticks as the only remaining remaining items she had from Muthr. She would have the laser stick be in one of her pockets. In a hypothetical season 2-3, Eva would start styling her hair in a half up half down so that she can wear Muthr's laser stick as a hair stick. Eva insisted for Rovender to have the other laser stick since she considers him to be her primary parent now.
As you can see, I borrowed a lot elements from her novel design. I've added shoulder patches, arm warmers & socks for added interest. I have Eva also wear a dress for a closer resemblance to her novel design.
I kept her green color scheme because I simply liked the look of it (and I watched the show first before knowing there's a novel). I also kept her bodysuit in a way so that her outfit can functional for all the parkour that she does throughout the show. I added functional pockets to her outfit so that she can store stuff in them when needed (also, I like giving dresses functional pockets!)
The physical differences between Muthr's novel & show design left my jaw wide open! Are they even supposed to be the same character!? This may be an unpopular opinion for those who have read the books before, but I like Muthr's show design more than her novel design. Yeah, Muthr in the show does look kinda sanitized, but she looks a lot more approachable and friendly. As a kid, if I see her novel design, I would've cried lmao.
As you can see, I kept her colors & silhouette because I really liked those. I also kept the drawing on her body because it's cute! There isn't a whole lot to say on what I kept from her show!design because of how extremely simple it is.
I've borrowed some elements from her novel design that I liked. It was tricky to achieve a balance between being mechanical and sleek. I kept her metal bolt face marks but also rearrange them in a way to add interest in her face. I've made her neck, shoulders & arms mechanical as a nod to her novel roots. I swapped out her sleek wheel for a mechanical one since her novel design had that wheel.
I've expanded the size of her bun 4x bigger and added a laser "hair stick" because I find her "hair" in the show to be somewhat lacking. She has 3x spare laser sticks in her chest storage compartment in case she loses one. I added a painted apron on her to further highlight her role as a mother and to add more interest to her design.
Given the kind of events she went through, I'm shocked that Muthr hardly has a single scratch on her. Maybe I overdid it, but I added some burn & scratch marks to her design (her scratch marks are more so more visible upon closer inspection). The sanctuary caught on fire both in novels & show-not a single burn mark!? I gave her the equivalent of 2nd degree burns so that she'll have a faster recovery time (and so that Besteel would still be willing to harvest her parts).
I actually have zero issues with his show design. I also really liked it. Tbh, his novel design isn't as interesting as his show design. However, I still kept some elements from his novel design into my redesign for him. It wasn't easy to incorporate some of his novel elements since his novel design is very simple. The only things I managed to add are his body patterns, tool belt & lantern.
There isn't a whole I changed about his attire mainly because I preferred how he dresses in the show than novel. It just...works so well for me. Although, I did add two little things. I added a friendship bracelet Eva gave to him that she created out of Muthr's handkerchief (which he gave her some parts of his rope in return). Towards the end of episode 7, Eva insisted for him to keep Muthr's other laser stick. He accepted the stick since Eva still needed someone to guide her and he can fulfill in the role he hasn't fulfilled in such a long time. He finally found use of that pocket strap from his backpack :')
