mxtxtober day one: ghost

I probably won't be doing an art challenge for each day this October, but I plan on doing a couple a week. I haven't drawn something for fun instead of work in too long ;)

Mxtxtober's 1: Ghost (ilu Ghost Fire HC) and 2) danmei crossover (teenage white lotus binghe + teenage grouch mo ran) this was going to be a three-part thing, but I have to be up at 4am--maybe the complete set will show up later ;)

for mxtxtober day 1: ghost

in my defense I didn't even know this was a thing until literally a half hour ago when i saw the prompts list and wrote this in like 20 minutes. don't ask me how i didn't know about this bc i have no clue either...

DAY 1: GHOST

Start

His bright laughter still echoed down the halls of the Cloud Recesses and seemed to reverberate through him. Even now he saw flashes of black and crimson in the corner of his eye, only to snap his head in that direction to find nothing but the pale colors of his home. The wind is a whistle of the flute he mastered playing his songs in the night. The teasing calls of his name—Lan Zhan…Lan Zhan—curled in his ears, hurtling him back in time.

In a blink it was all gone. The laughter, the dark colors, the music, the calls. All gone. Only silence and pale imitations of color remained.

One blink and he was reminded of what was lost. His chest ached and his heart cried. It was only in the deepest of nights, alone in his rooms that the crystal clear tears fell. One by one they would drop and splatter on his guqin, the strings still reverberating with a song only he and a ghost know.

Years and years of cold, empty silence. No sun, no light, no reason to smile.

The only flickering warmth he still receives from that gone sun is a child, his small little fire, blazing the man’s life’s dream. Justice. That is what he wanted. To stand with justice. To protect the weak.

Lan Wangji will follow his steps.

One foot after the other on this narrow path that people boast they follow but don’t. Only the few brave fools who still believe in the goodness of people walk it. That is what they are, aren’t they? Fools?

How could they not be when at every turn they meet adversity and still don’t relent. Only a fool would continue on that road. Isn’t it better to live a life free of strife?

But, what would that life be like if it came at the cost of the innocent?

To live without regrets.

That is not possible on that wide open road.

To always stand with justice.

That is the narrow path that only fools walk.

That is the path he wishes he walked before it was too late.

He walks it now, not caring of the fame or glory his actions will bring. That is not what’s important. Only the fools value that. The true fools. The ones who walk the broad path. The ones who make enemies so they can cut them down to boast their skills.

The ones who made a ghost out of the only other one who walked this narrow path. 

Complicity and justice. The two paths. One broad; one narrow. One well walked; one barely marked.

He will walk it. And, he will mark it. He will teach it and lead the young down it.

Even if it is a path barely dared to venture, he will try to make it less so.

For his sake.

For the little fire’s sake.

For his ghost’s sake.

His heart will live on.
