JOHN MURPHY + GENDER ... 

born with an F on his birth certificate, he transitioned socially at a very young age. his father was very supportive, and backed every decision that john chose to make... even going as far as to help him legally change his name at the age of six. his mother often still referred to him as his deadname, and didn’t care to adhere to the pronouns he’d chosen for himself. this caused a lot of fights between alex and john’s mom. 

the arc didn’t allow medical transitions, due to how short medicinal supplies were, but they were supportive in every other way. rules were strictly enforced that you must respect someone for who they were, even if you didn’t agree with such. 

after alex died, john lost the majority of his support system and he retreated in on himself in an attempt to protect the vulnerable parts of him that his mother chose to attack. to appease her, he presented femininely right up until she drank herself to death. 

while in prison, he went through puberty. growing a chest made his dysphoria even worse, and he’d often shred his bedsheets to bind with... until the guards confiscated his sheets, worried that he’d hang himself with them.  

the ground was a new place entirely. he’d been in lockup so long that many people didn’t even remember him. he wasn’t allowed to fraternize amongst the other prisoners due to being in a secure hold, so he was able to present how he wanted on the ground. very few dared question him -- and those that did lost a finger or two.
