A few thoughts on my Bimmer.....

E46 BMW

I honestly wish sometimes, that I was one of those car enthusiasts that could recall absolutely every minute detail about a model, particularly the one I am passionate about. You know, moments before setting out typing this article I found myself reaching for my big red BMW book I have stashed away in my bookshelf. However I then quickly thought to myself, if someone really wants to know every last detail, they can just read one of those books.

What I do know however is my BMW. In January 2010 just after Australia day a wild 19 year old boy took delivery of a second hand 2000 BMW 325i executive sedan with just under 170,000 km on the clock. That boy was me, and I was very excited. My very first drive, as the proud owner of the car was straight across the road to Albion Maccas, (I know, not very exciting) probably because that was the only food I could afford after shelling out quite a bit of money for my new wheels.

The 325i is the staple offering in the BMW range. I believe this is so because it sits comfortably in the middle of the 3 series range. The strong 2.5 litre six cylinder engine is a perfect compromise between power and economy and the five speed manual transmission is smooth, delivering seamless gear changes when used correctly. I say middle of the range, because unlike Henry Ford with the model T, BMW are at the other end of the crazy spectrum offering a model for every occasion imaginable. I could go on about the 318i, 320i, 323i, ……..

I think I’m already loosing readers, so I’ll keep it simple. My car is faster than a 318i that produces 89 kilowatts of power, but a 330i, on the other hand produces 171, and is indeed faster than mine. My 325i produces 141 kilowatts of power at 6000 rpm and 245 nm of torque from 3500 rpm. According to the all knowledgeable internet my car should do zero to one hundred in 7.6 seconds, maybe someone with a P plate could beat that. I don’t know…

My 325i has seen most of South East Queensland, from the Bunya mountains to Queen Mary falls, and RainbowBeach to Binna Burra, and even Murwillumbah in Northern New South Wales. I have driven some of the GreatOcean road in it, seen the twelve (or less now) apostles and the bay of Isles. It has survived the worst of the Snowy mountains highway, taking me up to the ski fields of Perisher in mid July and the sweltering February Mackay heat, where my brother now calls home. It has been west to Chinchilla and even stayed out at Tara on a property that had more cats, dogs and caravans than people. I’ve driven it on dirt roads, I’ve taken it on the odd camping trip, and yes even though I drive euro and take a foam mattress I still refuse to call it glamping!

So there you have it. A few thoughts on my Bimmer!
