YOU are the RUSSIAN, the CANADIAN, the BRIT, the NORWEGIAN, the THAI, the FILIPINO, the SOUTH AFRICAN, the AUSSIE, the AMERICAN, the BRAZILIAN, and so many more. The privilege to know YOU as an individual is to taste the soul ESSENCE of us all. It is our shared gift from the all that is that is in us all. The privilege to know YOU as the many gives even high purpose to love. We can share so much more when we share the awareness that we are all one expressing ourselves in endless forms, sounds, tastes, feelings and visuals. Tonight @richardburrows and I were the guests at @soundstreams Salon 21, where we talked with moderator/host Emma about @torqpercussion's upcoming Ear Candy concert, and the music of Philip Glass, and why it's difficult to play the same 5 notes for 25 minutes in a row. Then we played a two-person version of Glass's 1+1 (even though it's written as a solo, 'cause that's how we roll). Thanks to @bendietschi, Lawrence and the whole Soundstreams crew for having us! For violin, cello, and piano. Hui uses traditional gestures idiomatic to the piano trio to translate and transform the original theme. Her piece contains virtuosic lines for all instruments, each of which exists alone, and within, a densely contrapuntal texture. (“They served crumpets,” Hui offers, as a waggish addendum to her contribution’s title). This work was premiered on April 22, 2004 at the 'Freddy's Tune' concert presented by Soundstreams in Toronto (Canada).

In this acclaimed and ground-breaking work, the first oratorio ever to be written in the Cree language, Weesageechak and Misigoo bemoan the departure of the living to the land of the dead. They travel to the magic island where the Spirits of the Dead dance by the light of the moon, held up by Atheegis the Frog. Weesageechak kills the Frog and swallows the moon. The Spirits can no longer dance; Weesageechak captures them in a basket and sets out to return to the land of the living. But the Spirits are restless, and on the long journey back they escape, one by one, from the basket. Weesageechak is the Cree incarnation of the Trickster, the central figure of Native North American mythology. His role is to teach us the pivotal lesson that we exist not to suffer, not to wallow in guilt, but to take pleasure in the simple act of living. Libretto by Tomson Highway Instrumentation: For soprano, tenor, actor, chorus, and chamber ensemble (flute, oboe, percussion, violin, viola, cello, contrabass) This work was premiered on February 11, 2008 at the Jane Mallet Theatre in Toronto (Canada) and performed by: Xin Wang (soprano), Bud Roach (tenor), Elmer Iseler Singers, Lydia Adams (conductor).
