Back by unpopular demand -- me, writing yet another Lian Lou WIP that might never see the light of day.

Another vendor was more interested in the funeral procession that Fang Duobing had evidently just missed. “It’s a love story for the ages,” the man sighed as he presided over a boiling pot of stew. “Xue Fangfei, the daughter of a local magistrate, had eloped with a nobody. And through their partnership, it seems, that husband of hers rose to a grand position in court. “How tragic,” said the vendor as his pot ran over. “She recently committed adultery, and committed suicide on a mountain. Perhaps the guilt was too much to bear. Her poor husband.”
“She died from adultery?” Di Feisheng asked with a blank stare.
“It’s not the adultery that kills you, but the guilt of it,” the vendor sighed dreamily, even as Li Lianhua helpfully took a jar full of his spilling stew.
So, just locals being locals.

Fang Duobing swung his legs as they sat on the rooftop of the Jiang family residence eating stew. No one would think to look up here. That Jiang Li was pretty—one of those willowy bodies, like Li Lianhua’s. She bade her servant—Tong’er, he overheard—to bring her a new sash. She must have been home for several months now, and she was resuming her studies at the local academy. When Fang Duobing was young, his mother made certain he received the best tutors in the capital. Perhaps this nunnery she had gone to had provided her with the same. Her penmanship was excellent; he did not need to be close to understand that. Just the way she carried herself, the strokes of her brush, told him all he needed to know. Perhaps her father had sent her tutors.

Oooh the director of The Double said the ending is actually a HE but the way they filmed it was to focus on the artistic/aesthetic expression of it - and that’s why it looked like an open ending. And it was Wang Xingyue who called him and asked to film to add on the extras to 100% show a HE more explicitly 😭😭😭😭
