1500 Waco ISD students are homeless. That's 10 percent of the entire student population. Most of the students live doubled up with other families, a small percentage are unaccompanied minors, and others live in shelters or transitional housing facilities (pictured above is a childcare room at transitional housing site in Waco.) Cheryl Pooler, a homeless liaison with the Waco public school district, says that every time students change schools they fall 4 to 6 months behind. Pooler, with funding provided through the McKinney-Vento Act, works to help students stay in their school of origin, secure transportation, uniforms, and other supportive services.
