Wiley - Boasty Gang ALBUM REVIEW
Wiley is one of the only artists that will drop an album that’s been delayed countless times, call it his last album and then drop another album a few weeks after without any prior notice. Grime is of course Wiley’s primary genre but he’s done a lot of different things in his career. However, most of Wiley’s non grime releases that are more pop and hip hop-oriented have been missteps (See Clear Now, Race Against Time, 100% Publishing). However, I do like some Wiley pop songs like Reload and If I Could. His latest album, Boasty Gang contains no Grime or hip hop but is a Dancehall album. Both Grime and Dancehall are some of my favorite genres so this interested me. Grime is heavily influenced by dancehall and Wiley’s dad was a reggae artist so it kind of makes sense. Also, Wiley’s reggae doesn’t sound forced like his a lot of his pop stuff did. This album seems to be more of a compilation rather than a Wiley studio album because there are a ton of features and a handful of these songs don’t even have Wiley on them. Aside from the album not being Grime at all, one of the biggest difference between this and Godfather 3, this album is actually mixed well. Like where was the good mixing on that album? Much like Godfather 3, none of the features on this album are credited so it’s hard to tell who is who. He should’ve given the features credit because some of the features carry a lot of these songs. Still, some of the features are kind of annoying. Wiley has had a lot of big songs in his career but his biggest song in recent memory is Boasty, which is a Dancehall song. It actually might be one of his biggest songs but the version that’s so popular features Sean Paul, Stefflon Don and Idris Elba. The version on this album is just Wiley and it’s actually pretty boring. All the features really added to the song to make it great but there’s not really much to the solo version that makes me wanna hear it again. The song Fireman sounds like a really shittier version of Boasty that Wiley made because Boasty was so popular. Many of Wiley’s Grime peers have been making dancehall songs for a really long time, including Kano who has a dancehall song called My Sound. Wiley has a song called My Sound on this album that isn’t even close to touching Kano’s. There may be some lack of creativity in some of these songs but this album does have some high points. Bad Like We was an instant standout. I love the girl who is singing the background vocals on it. She really stood out and made the song that much better. Apparently Wiley was supposed to drop an album called Full Circle and Bad Like We was on the tracklist and was supposed to feature Nicki Minaj but she doesn’t appear on it. There’s a leaked version of the song online that you can hear her part though. One of my favorite songs on this album is Signal. I wish I knew who was on the song so I could give them their props but they sounded great. The single Givenchy Bag that dropped in 2019 is also on this album. The song features Future, Chip and Nafe Smallz and I love this song. I’ve been listening to it ever since it came out. Wiley’s contributions to his own song are minimal but Future, Chip and Nafe Smallz all do their thing on the song and the production works well for everyone. One thing that did surprise me is that if Givenchy Bag is on the album, then My One with Tory Lanez, Kranium and Dappy should’ve been on the album. They’re both Dancehall songs and they both dropped last year and My One would’ve fit right in on the album. A lot of Boasty Gang doesn’t impress me and there are plenty of bad, basic and average songs on here with not too much variety, but there are some great songs on here and the highs are really high.
