DAY 21: Notes
Nalkark’s notes.
Subject Matter: Item 0
Length: Varies
Weight: Varies
Height: Varies
Date of acquisition: Day 0 of the new calendar.
Acquisition notes: Fell into Wyvern’s end with the castle. ‘Died’ on impact. All limbs broken. Heart beating but irregular.
Further notes: Managed to temporarily revive Item 0. Item lashed out and attacked, no major damage was caused. Mental conditioning began. After several years of work we revived it once more. Item 0 was much more cooperative then its initial awakening. Made several pained cries minutes after revival. Was once more put to sleep. Construction began on replacements for damaged parts. Materials scarce, bone and mucas used mostly. Limbs attached, wings unable to replaced at this point in time. Revived Item 0 once more. Item was no longer in pain however disobedience returned. Mental conditioning begins anew. Revived Item 0 after several more years of conditioning. Much more obedient and willing to follow orders. Item is unable to communicate. Put into hibernation until further notice.
Addendum: Item’s name has been changed from Item 0 to ‘The Lost’ all future records are to refer to it as such.
Day 12: Moonlight
Nalkark stood on a balcony, gazing up at the moon silently.
“Master Nalkark. You called for me sir?” Maelstrom spoke up from the room behind him, bowing slightly.
“Come. Stand beside me. It’s not right that only I should enjoy this beautiful moonlit night.” Nalkark didn’t even turn to face the Goldbeard.
“Certainly. What is it you wanted sir?” Maelstrom took his place beside Nalkark, however unlike the Nakarkos he looked down at barren wasteland below.
“Maelstrom? Why look at the death below us when you could witness the majesty above.” Nalkark questioned, tilting his head slightly.
“Apologies sir. I’m just reminded of better times. Your father would always have me at his side when he addressed the masses.” Maelstrom reminisced, seeing the once great scholars of Dragon’s Genesis in the bones that littered the floor.
“Hm. What was my father like Maelstrom?....I knew him well enough...but. I can’t help but feel like I saw only part of him.
“He was a great man sir. He inspired us all with his presence. He helped me when no one else would. Found me when I was just a normal Ceadeus. Had me teach you about being Keeper. Gave me purpose and....had it not been for him...I would of gone blind years ago. Your father was a great man who inspired many of us. Who gave us purpose.....The Keeper who was a father to you was an inspiration to us.”
“Do you think he’d be proud of me? Of what I’ve done.” Nalkark turned his gaze downwards.
“That is hard to say sir. However, I think he would be. You survived. You kept going and you kept the heart of Dragon’s Genesis alive. When everything fell you kept one fire burning. A faint fire that grew in this darkness.”
“One more question. Do you think he’d agree with what I’m about to do?” Nalkark once more shifted his gaze, this time facing Maelstrom.
“...I’m afraid I cannot say, sir.”
DAY 08: The Keepers trial
Another day dawned on Dragon’s Genesis. Waking Nalkark from his slumber. Bugs buzzed around him as he dragged himself out of bed. He opened his wardrobe and retrieved his morning attire. After getting ready he made his way through the palace and into the dining room where his parents and brothers were waiting.
“Good morning Nalkark.” They all spoke in unison. Aside from this breakfast was silent.
Eventually everyone left the table one by one to attend to their various duties. Nalkark followed his father. “Father.” He said quietly.
“Yes my son?” The Keeper turned to face the little one.
“Why were there bugs in my room?” Nalkark asked with genuine curiosity.
“Did you leave the window open?”
“I don’t have any windows and we’re surrounded by a library. Thunderbugs don’t get to the palace.”
“Hm. Is that all you needed son? You know I’m busy.”
“Not quite. My slippers were on the right side of my bed. I leave them on the left. Always. My pillows were yellow. I know they’re blue. My robe has three lines of gold trim. It had two this morning. My mask was dirty. I ALWAYS clean my mask. The hallway was about two metres longer from my room to the dining room. My chair was the only one at the table not made from misty peaks wood. Kavoss and Talnung were unusually silent at breakfast. Mother’s dress had constellations in different places. This is not normal.” Nalkark gave his father a stern look, although the masks they wore defeated the point.
The Keeper slowly clapped. “Very good Nalkark. It normally takes years to notice the Keeper’s illusions. You are ready. Hold out your hand.”
Nalkark did as he was told. The Keeper dropped a small stone cube into Nalkark’s hand. Every face of the cube was perfectly smooth.
“Solve it.” With that The Keeper left, leaving Nalkark to puzzle the next puzzle he was given.
-------------------------------------
Nalkark returned to his room, examining the cube intently. There was nothing to solve. The cube was perfectly smooth, any smoother and it’d be a sphere. As Nalkark idly fiddled with the puzzle he heard a distinct ‘click’ He quickly turned to cube to see what he had done...only to find nothing. Once more, on the side he couldn’t see ‘click’ Nalkark tried each face of the cube and sure enough they clicked only when he couldn’t see them yet still nothing happened.
Nalkark closed his eyes and held the cube tight. There were six clicks followed by a ‘clunk’
A sphere. He was holding a sphere all along. Engraved with elaborate patterns. Unlike the cube, Nalkark knew exactly what to do with this. He ran to the atrium. He placed the sphere into the empty eye of The Keeper’s statue. The stone tentacles around the stature uncurled, forming a spiral staircase into the ceiling.
Nalkark eagerly made his way up the stairs. The room waiting for him was like no other. It was a glass dome but instead of looking out at the library surrounding the palace it looked out at the night sky. Constellations within arms reach! However Nalkark couldn’t get distracted now. In the centre of the room was another sphere, this one floating above a small pedestal.
Nalkark reached out to touch the sphere, he moved it and with it the sky above him shifted. He paused for thought and examined the pedestal. A lens sat beneath the sphere. He tried lining his father’s birth sign up with the lens. The sky turned red and violently shifted back to its original position. “Hm...” Nalkark once more moved the sphere, this time lining up Tri Draconis with the lens. Once more the sky turned red and returned to its original position.
He tried once more this time with Harenam Navis. No violent reaction.
Orbis Perpetuum? Nothing.
Luna Tremebundus? Once more, nothing.
He continued in this fashion until he returned to Harenam Navis. The sphere opened, inside was a single blue gemstone. Just the right size and shape to fit into Nalkark’s mask.
“Congratulations my son.” The Keeper placed a hand on Nalkark’s shoulder. “However, this was merely a trial constructed by our ancestors. Whilst your passing of it is impressive. Only through tougher, real trials will you be fit for the role of Keeper. That being said, I am still proud of you. No one had discovered The Keeper’s trial, let alone passed The Keeper’s trial at your age before.”
Nalkark silently stared up at his father’s masked face and shakily nodded.
Day 03: Learning
“Young Master Nalkark. If you could please pay attention. You’re falling behind in your studies. Just because you’ve passed one trial doesn’t mean you can ignore the other two.” The Ceadeus scalded, repeatedly tapping the blackboard he was standing in front of.
“Right, sorry, Yes.”
“Yes....” The Ceadeus glared with his one eye.
“Yes sir.” Nalkark sat upright and focused intently on the blackboard.
The Ceadeus simply sighed. “Go take a short break Nalkark. You’re clearly in no state to learn and I’m not going to teach you anything if you wont learn it. Be back within the hour.” He dismissed Nalkark before wheeling down the hallway. Being a Ceadeus he didn’t really have legs, thankfully The Keeper provided him with a wheelchair, enabling him to teach at Dragon’s genesis.
Nalkark Happily left the private classroom and headed straight for his room. He locked the door behind him and opened a drawer under his bed. In it was various cogs and springs. Human technology, nothing compared to the Magic of the Dragons but it still fascinated him. One piece in his collection worked. A device that functioned similarly to the Castle’s grand sundial albeit without the need of a sun. Occasionally it would tick and move. It was clearly broken and he was determined to fix it. That’d definitely show his brothers what for...well alongside with the Keeper’s gem he had in his mask.
“Geode...If you could please pay attention. You’re failing to grasp the magnitude of our plan. Just because you’re the muscle doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be aware of how things are going to proceed.” Nalkark Scalded, dropping the bones to the floor, a sound which echoed throughout the dark pit.
“Aplogies, yes.”
“Yes...” Nalkark gave Geode a Look.
“Yes Nalkark.” Geode quickly corrected with a bow.
Nalkark sighed. “Return to your post Geode. I’ll brief you later but clearly you’re not in a state to grasp things. Perhaps Krankheit could explain it better.”
Geode bowed once more. “Yes Nalkark” She left quietly, looking for the Chaotic Gore.
Nalkark Solemnly left the makeshift classroom and returned beneath the bones that littered Wyvern’s end. He sealed the path behind him and parted the wall in-front of him. Various wrecks and weapons were hidden behind the false wall. Human Technology, a frightening thing compared to what became of the dragons, something he had to learn. One piece in his collection stood out. A device that functioned similarly to a Fatalis, albeit without the need of a soul. Occasionally it would twitch and whine. It was clearly dying and had been since that fateful day but he had to fix it. It’d finally give him a chance to take back what the humans took from him....well this alongside his newly trained followers.
