Hello, my name is _________, and I am a recovering addict. Welcome to the (Server Name) (Day) (morning/evening) online group of Narcotics Anonymous. This is an open meeting. I’d like to open this meeting with a moment of silence followed by the “We” version of the serenity prayer. God grant me ...
Online NA Meeting Script Template
Online NA Meetings are as unique as the people who facilitate them. Most meeting chairs follow the same script to ensure meeting consistency. Members appreciate the familiar format as well - they know what to expect.
This is my personal script. Please feel free to download it, edit it, and use it as much as you like. No attribution necessary.
It’s important to save all of your templates, meeting minutes, and other documents in one place for easy access. I suggest Google Drive or DropBox. Make sure you adjust permissions to restrict editing. I suggest creating a folder for meeting chairs, a folder for administrative staff, and a folder for everything else.
The Serenity Prayer is an integral part of NA meetings. Please feel free to add this graphic to your NA Literature channel for ease of use. Most of us know it by heart but it’s nice to hand on hand. You can use a graphic design platform such as Canva to make your own too!
Online NA Meeting Formats
Due to Covid-19, thousands of online NA meetings are available online via zoom, Skype and my favorite, Discord. Online meetings mimic in-person meetings as much as possible; however, there are differences and it’s important to understand them.
Online NA Meetings vs. In-Person NA Meetings
1. Online meetings take place online via Skype, Zoom, Discord and other platforms.
2. Meeting participants can attend via audio or via video chat. Members are asked to mute their microphones when they aren’t speaking.
3. Online meetings vary when it comes to costs. My server does not take donations. You can provide donation links if you like. This can cause quite the debate among members (be ready).
4. Online meetings aren’t fully anonymous as Discord members have profiles where they can post their picture and share links to their social media profiles. It’s important to stress the importance of anonymity during each meeting.
5. Service commitments are different online. You won’t find greeters or coffee makers in online meetings; however, meeting organizers are getting creative when it comes to being of service. Positions may include meeting secretaries, tech support specialists, online greeters, moderators, meeting chairs, admin staff, and much more. Service positions are advertised during business meetings and are rotated among members.
6. But is it really NA? You’ll get this question a lot when you run an online Discord NA meeting. You can register your virtual meeting on the NAWS website which makes it’s officially official. If you choose not to register, it’s not an official NA meeting. Pretty basic stuff.
7. Meeting organizers and chairs need to have a basic understanding of how Discord works. Most importantly, they need to know how to mute and un-mute members, manage their own audio and video, and provide tech support to new members. This can include posting links to NA literature in the chat, moderating arguments, etc.
8. Discord servers are owned by one Discord member. This gives absolute power to said owner. I’ve seen large communities deleted over squabbles among leadership. Some servers rotate ownership among administrators. Just be aware that the server owner has the ability to delete the community. It’s a good idea to keep a list of members (if they agree) should that happen.
