Kpop Hero Holland
🌼 Nar_C interpretation 🌼
When Holland first released the storyline, I thought that Nar_C would be a continuation of that storyline. However, it turned out that the MV exactly follows the storyline, which I think is a smart move, because other wise I would be really confused. So what is the message Holland is trying to send us with Nar_C?
Meaning of the Daffodil:
Here are some relevant meanings of the Daffodil I found:
-Rebirth
-New Beginnings
-Happiness
-Awareness/Inner Reflection
-Memory
-Forgiveness
-Desire to revive an old relationship
These are all western meanings. According to Wikipedia, in Eastern cultures they mean good luck and fortune, but I couldn’t find what they mean specifically in Korean culture.
Going off the western meaning, The daffodil represents Jaeseok asking Holland for forgiveness after their fights. When Jaeseok throws away the flowers, it represents his refusal to go through the cycle of fighting and forgiveness again. He doesn’t care about Holland’s forgiveness anymore, and so he leaves.
Holland and Jaeseok’s fights:
The biggest question I asked myself during the MV: why did Holland and Jaeseok fight?
This is how the storyline described them:
“Sensitive and delicate Holland. Spontaneous and impulsive Jaeseok.”
Perhaps Holland was sensitive so that when Jaeseok teased him or pushed him about certain topics, Holland would get upset. But since Holland also “saw himself in Jaeseok”, Holland was also spontaneous and impulsive, leading to their fights.
“After fighting, Jaeseok would always bring a yellow daffodil as an apology.” Meaning that whoever started the fights, Jaeseok would always have to apologize for it. It was always Jaeseok who had to take the initiative to fix their relationship. You can see their fight in one of the first scenes of the MV. Holland pushes away Jaeseok, obviously upset, while Jaeseok trails behind him asking for forgiveness.
Narcissus
So how does this story tie in to the Narcissus myth? This is a cautionary tale.
It isn’t Holland’s fault he’s sensitive. People (like me) are just like that sometimes and that’s okay. While Jaeseok should have learned it was wrong to tease Holland or push him about certain things, Holland shouldn’t have always placed the burden on Jaeseok to apologize. It was like Holland was too prideful to admit he was wrong.
I believe this is the message Holland was trying to send with his music video. Don’t be too prideful, too narcissistic to admit your faults. If you continue to blame other people and avoid responsibility, eventually people will get tired of your shit and leave.
I see many people in the comments like “Jaeseok’s gonna catch these hands for hurting Holland!” While i understand these are jokes stemming from our need to protect Holland, I think this is kind of a immature stance to take? I don’t blame Jaeseok for leaving. If my significant other was always too stubborn to admit they were wrong, eventually I would get tired of it too. Holland is trying to portray a real, complex relationship. In most relationships, couples break up because both people have issues that can’t be resolved. I hope that people, like Holland, don’t just blame Jaeseok for everything and see the bigger picture.
So does that mean Holland and Jaeseok are incompatible? Is it over between them for good?
Not quite.
Don’t forget that this is part of Holland’s mini album:
So there is another song, “Up”, that could possibly be a continuation of the storyline in Nar_C!
The last lines of the story says:
“Sometimes he opens the door but Jaeseok never comes back. Holland goes outside holding a yellow daffodil.”
So after Jaeseok left, Holland did some self reflecting and realized what was wrong with their relationship. He realizes that he needs to be the one to ask for forgiveness this time. So now, Holland takes the yellow daffodil. I believe this will be the storyline in Up. Will Jaeseok accept his apology? I guess we’ll have to see.
Keep in mind that I’m only talking about things in the context of the music video. I’m not saying Holland is actually narcissistic. But I believe Holland has used his past experiences with love to write this story, so there may be a grain of truth to it.
Thanks for reading this far. Please share your own interpretation in the notes, messages, or make your own posts! I would like to see what other people think about this!
