Posted a new Narrata piece: THE BOUNDARY IS THE SELF.

It’s the fourth / final essay in a sequence that started with AI black boxes and ended somewhere closer — or stranger — than that.

The rough movement was:

we’re building systems we can’t fully define

the self can’t fully access itself either

the black box was already in the body

and maybe the self is not hidden behind the system at all, but appears at the boundary

That last part has been doing a lot of work for me.

Not “mind inside body looking out at world,” but something more like a moving edge between unreadable interior and inferred exterior — with memory as residue, perception as stress, and awareness never quite able to step outside the frame that makes experience possible in the first place.

The boundary string instrument on SUBSTRATE.HOST definitely fed into this one too. Watching that sealed line deform, smear, retain afterimage, and never quite open helped clarify something I’d only been circling conceptually before: the strongest image of self might not be a hidden core, but a live perimeter.

A boundary that remembers pressure.

I’ve been thinking about “serious play” a lot lately (thanks Mario!)— the way a soft object can hold a hard idea.

After The Ontology Gap and The Planck Scale of the Self, the theory started doing what it always does: trying to become a thing you can touch.

Meet VESSEL-9: a Host prototype. A small, black cephaloid container that implies interiority while refusing direct access.

Each Host contains an embedded NFC interface. When scanned, it resolves to a remote identity layer that may evolve independently of the object. The object exists locally. The identity exists elsewhere. Neither contains the whole.

Not a toy. Not a character. A boundary you can keep on your desk.
