27 of My Favorite Storylines (in no particular order)

Maou

A genuine suspense thriller where the lines of good and bad are blurred so far that you realize early on, there is no simple answer and the end will not be satisfying. All of it stems from a childhood accident that ends up ruining the lives the two main characters and those close to them and its told so perfectly throughout its episodes that the more you learn the more terrifyingly tragic the the story is which is why its so memorable.

As an audience member: As we learn of Naruse’s plot to ruin the life of Serizawa, at first you think he’s evil even though he is the most successful lawyer known to the public. But then we learn why he is doing this and it is revenge for his younger brother’s life who Serizawa accidentally killed while in middle school with his gang of friends as they were bullying the young kid. Revenge is what Naruse wants and its why he becomes a lawyer because Serizawa gets off scotch free thanks to his father who buys off the trial to save his son. Then as more and more of the histories between these two men unfold we see good and bad within each of them, regret and pain shared between them throughout the years which no one can deter and soon this thriller comes to a conclusion that leaves the audience in tears because the ending cannot be stopped.

As a writer: Toeing the line between what’s good or bad or who is the devil and angel is hard. What I love that this story does is it shoes good and bad through an ever present grey which is true to life. Serizawa messed up and has suffered for his mess up. But because of that trial which he didn’t want his father to rig, his friends and family suffer for his mistake and even at the end he feels he deserves death. And to watch this journey unfold you see the calculations of how Naruse wants revenge so cleverly unfold that as a writer to be that far ahead of the audience in telling this story is inspiring. It is also a lesson of why you have to be calculated to make it work and its why foreshadowing and only giving out enough information and not too much is how a story like this can be succesful.
