NaruShino Modern AU where Kiba invites Naruto to the local aquatic center during a summerbreak back home to catch up with The Boys and they just shoot the shit and have fun!

But Naruto cannot for the life of him keep his eyes from drifting toward this one lifeguard in particular and when Kiba finally smacks Naruto on the back and tells him to "just go say 'Hi' already! He noticed you a long time ago!" Naruto starts to panic and sputter nonsense.

He can't belive he was so obvious and Kiba makes it sound like it's just that easy to talk to someone who's attractive as hell and blah blah blah... Kiba, Choji and Shikamaru just stare at Naruto, almost unwilling to believe he seriously can't tell that it's literally Shino sitting in that chair.

Meanwhile Shino is trying to not get distracted by the fact that Naruto still hasn't actually acknowledged him. Again. He expected Kiba to come by and give him a hard time during work, but thought it was thoughtful of him to meet up with the others a little before his shift ends. But Naruto not remembering him was just gonna make things awkward. Again. Still, the sooner the better. He was itching to put his sunglasses back on without having to worry about them getting damaged or wet in the pool.

Konoha 12 Head Canon #2: Shino Cares

It doesn’t show, but Shino is a genuine person. Out of all his friends, he is probably the sensitive one. It stemmed from being forgotten and left out on most things since childhood. That might have resulted with others being a stone-cold hearted jerk (he’s not pointing at Sasuke), or acting like a complete goof and pulling crazy stunts just to get attention (he’s not pointing at Naruto, either), but Shino was different. He does recognize his weirdness, and he’d like to believe that he turned out differently than the others. He’s indifferent, mysterious, but also sensitive and caring. He holds grudges (he still hasn’t forgiven Kiba and Ino for murdering eight of his parasitic insects on different occasions), but is craving for companionship, (he secretly wants to be closer to Naruto, he has been trying since their genin days. He hasn’t given up. Lol.), someone who would trust him as much as he does them. Shino cares so much about his friends, they probably have no idea. And he wouldn’t be surprised. He’s used to this, but it hurts all the same.

When Sasuke left and all the boys went out on that mission without him, it had hurt him something awful. He took it personally. He truly believed they could’ve brought Sasuke back home if he had been there and his insects. They should’ve asked for him at least. Sasuke was his friend, too.

Or when Naruto keeps forgetting his name, that hurt a lot. He is still bitter that Naruto recognized the others, but took thirty seconds before he finally remembered him. It doesn’t matter that half of his face was covered, Naruto should remember all his friends. (He hasn’t forgotten what Sasuke looked like, and they all barely saw the Uchiha since he left.)

Or what about that time when they all decided to just kill Sasuke themselves? That shit was intense. Ino was crying and they didn’t know how to tell Naruto. Shino was quiet, but that felt like a fatal blow. Then Naruto suddenly told them he was going to handle Sasuke by himself. Shino couldn’t hold back a remark that time. What if they both ended up dead? He didn’t want that conscience in his head.

He would also like it to be known that he was the first shipper of NaruHina. He knew about Hinata’s feelings from the start and would always try to jump in to help her get his attention, although very subtle. Didn’t want the others knowing he was fully supporting the Hyūga princess with the village’s number one knucklehead. But that was before. Now that they’re married, he would like to claim credits.

He’s also easily the most protective when it comes to Hinata. Aside from Neji, but that guy was rude and harsh with Hinata when they were kids, so Shino still claims the top spot. Kiba can be just as protective, but he’s a jerk, too. Shino likes to think he is kinder. He’s not being arrogant, he’s just telling straight facts.

Naruto was used to coming home to an unlocked apartment. His friends liked to stop by and wait for him to return instead of running around to find him. They were always welcome, he gave them all spare keys. It was nice knowing that he had a group of people who cared.

However, when he opened the door it was dark and quiet. He tried to feel for other chakra signatures but came up empty. Still on edge he turned the nearest light on and came to a shocking sight. His house was clean, not a single sign of clutter. All the scrolls he’s been using to study for the Jonin exams were tucked away in their own labeled spots, no clothes strewn about, and the things he's collected on missions were displayed proudly on shelves. He moved to the kitchen and his bedroom, noticing the same cleanliness.

It didn’t make the blonde angry. He was actually relieved. Naruto was spending most of his days out of his apartment studying, instead of in it because the clutter was getting too much. Everyday he wanted to sort through his stuff but he lost steam as soon as he looked at the piles of documents and memories.

Once he realized that he wasn’t a victim of a robbery he switched over to trying to figure out who helped him.

He remembered Kakashi-sensei offering help but the blonde knew that the man has been too busy lately to just drop by and do all of this. He knew Sakura was busy, Sasuke was out of the village, and Shikamaru was on a mission.

There was only one person that really knew how he felt and would’ve helped him like this. Naruto smiled and left the house to find the man in question.

Shino was in his office when Naruto walked in. He was on track to being a teacher at the Academy and was busy grading papers for the teacher he was shadowing for the last few months.

“Naruto, I thought you weren’t due back until tomorrow.” Shino didn’t look shocked to see the man.

“I finished early. I came home to a different sight.” He walked closer to Shino’s chair. The Aburame moved his chair back and looked up. He raised an eyebrow, letting the blonde continue. “My apartment is organized.”

“I thought it would cheer you up. You’ve been off lately. Can’t have the sun darken.” Shino shrugged. In all honesty Shino would do anything to help Naruto. That’s what boyfriends do.

“Still, I can’t believe you cleaned my room!” Naruto. “That room was the worst.”

“I had a day or two off.” Shino took Naruto’s hand and smiled.

“Thank you. As a token of appreciation come over for dinner. I’ll make you something nice.” Naruto bent down and kissed Shino on his forehead. It was soft and gentle, full of love and appreciation.

“You mean you’re picking up take out and a terrible movie?”

“No, Kakashi-sensei taught me how to cook a few things. I wanna treat you.” The blonde seemed confident and Shino accepted it. Not often does he get fed homemade food. It meant more to him if it was from the man loved.

“Okay, after class I will come see you.” That gave Naruto a few hours to shop and cook. It was perfect.

“I’ll see you then.” The blonde practically skipped out of the office. Shino laughed quietly. He couldn’t wait.

My favorite NaruShino headcannon(s):

When Naruto first learned about Shino's kikaichu as a little kid, he was initially a bit shocked (probably screamed a bit if it came out of nowhere) but finds them really cool, and likes to listen to Shino talk about bugs and shit, even if he doesn't understand it. He'll remember most, if not all, the things Shino tells him about bugs, and even bring them up in later conversations.

But Shino first realized just how much Naruto cares about their friendship when he asked why Naruto was staring at the ground so much and taking so long to walk.

Naruto's answer was "Well, you like bugs, and I don't wanna step on any. I would hate it if anyone stepped on [his favorite animal, or maybe just Ramen] in front of me!" And Shino was in quiet awe of this little boy who seemingly wanted to avoid stepping on any bug whatsoever just to keep from upsetting Shino.

And then Shino sees him doing that same thing even when Naruto doesn't realize Shino's watching him, and he kind of just has to recalibrate because Naruto doesn't just try not to kill bugs in front of Shino; he tries not to kill bugs all the time.

I also like to think that Naruto would totally constantly fall asleep on Shino's lap and Shino never says anything about it, but, well... when someone points it out, he makes sure to sound very intelligent when he explains away his reasoning for not moving or waking Naruto to get him to move.

(As a side note, Naruto becomes really good at avoiding bugs, to the point where he can run and do shinobi stuff without having to watch his feet constantly. It's hella cool.)
