Hi, I loved the first chapter of Nasoni!! Can’t wait to read the rest!

I wanted to ask, what does the title mean?

Thank you and excellent question! This is answered in chapter 2, but nasoni is the plural of nasone, the public water fountains scattered through Rome. They were installed in the 1800's to provide fresh water to Roman citizens, echoing Ancient Rome, which was known for its public water fountains as well. They look like this and are, in my opinion, the most charming thing about the city. (I may be biased given all the wonders Rome has to offer, but they're just everywhere, always running, and you see people using them constantly. It's wonderful. 🥰)

Un nasone à l'entrée du Vicolo della Campanella. Les nasoni (littéralement « gros nez ») sont des fontaines publiques typiquement romaines distribuant gratuitement de l'eau potable. Elles sont apparues en 1874 et on croise toujours aujourd’hui à tous les coins de rue. On en dénombre près de 2500 sur la commune de Rome d'après Wikipedia. A Roma quarche tempo fa

quanno er popolino abitava nella città

in ogni strada o un po' più in là

'na fontanella se doveva da trova',

pe fatte na bevuta e levatte quell'arsura

specie quanno d'estate c'era la calura.

Mettenno er dito sotto la cannella

dar buco usciva l'acqua della fontanella,

senza cloro e senza coloranti,

limpida e fresca da fatte casca' li denti.

Quanno er vino su la tavola mancava

e pure er frigorifero nun esisteva

pe beve l’acqua fresca 'gni famija

mannava e regazzino a rimpije 'na bottija.

Specie in estate le file se facevano,

intorno a sta fontanella li regazzini ce giocavano

le bottije se rompevano

e tornanno a casa ce scajavano.

Erano artri tempi

tempi de povera gente

che s'accontentava der gnente.
